Cold fruit, thyme and birch, then incense
Orion goes back to childhood sailing trips along the coast near Mount Conero, steering by the stars while a grandfather pointed out the constellation and its belt. The perfume, an Extrait de Parfum dated 2015, runs from cool fruit first, then thyme, patchouli, birch and jasmine, and an incense, amber, oud and cedar base. A sample shows how green and how smoky it runs on you.

Spray and fruit
Bergamot, red currant, apple and pineapple make a cold, juicy opening, more crisp than sweet. The fruit feels airy, tart and bright, like spray at sea, and nothing in it is heavy yet. The weight of the perfume is kept back for later.

Herbs and smoke
Midway, the fruit gives way to an aromatic, spicy blend. Thyme brings a dry herbal note, birch a smoky, slightly tarry edge and patchouli earthy depth, while jasmine adds a little white-floral softness so the herbs do not stand alone.

Incense, oud, cedar
Darker and drier notes then fill the base. Incense and oud lay a resinous floor, cedar contributes clean, pencil-like wood, amber warms the edges, and musk smooths the finish. It is intense, as the brand says, and still tidy rather than syrupy.

How to test it
Orion starts cool and ends spicy, so judge it in two stages: the first few minutes, and the settled scent later in the day. Spring and autumn weather suit it. A light hand is enough for an extrait, and a second evening test shows how the incense and oud behave once the fruit has gone.

People who like fresh, green and aromatic perfumes with some depth: those who enjoy herbs, smoke and incense but also a crisp, fruity opening. It is not sweet, so lovers of gourmand scents may find it more austere than they expect.

About Tiziana Terenzi
Tiziana Terenzi grew out of a family candle workshop, Cereria Terenzi in Cattolica, whose packaging prints 'Since 1968'. The perfumes are extraits de parfum, and each is told as a memory of the siblings Tiziana and Paolo Terenzi: a night under the stars, a sailing trip, a bonfire. The pyramids are long and the stories personal, so it is hard to guess from a description which one will suit you. Wearing a 10 ml decant for a few days is the simpler way.
