Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham and turns memories and emotions into scent: a dance in Africa, a desert flower, a library, a nomadic life. The Eau de Parfums are built on a small library of raw materials, ambrette, sandalwood, violet, vetiver, and most of them stay transparent and close to the skin. That restraint is exactly why a sample helps: on paper they can seem simple, on skin they settle into something personal.

About Byredo
Three samples to start with, and a fourth
Bal d'Afrique is the house's bright side: bergamot, marigold and blackcurrant over violet and cyclamen, ending on cedarwood, vetiver and tonka. Mojave Ghost is the soft one, ambrette and naseberry, magnolia and sandalwood, powdery violet underneath. Gypsy Water is the outdoors, juniper and lemon over incense and pine needle on amber and vanilla. Add Blanche, aldehyde and rose centifolia on sandalwood and musks, for the clean linen effect.
What to expect on skin
Byredo keeps its perfumes airy. Expect a clear opening, a modest heart and a drydown of musks, woods or vetiver that sits near the body rather than around it; several wearings tell you more than one. Bibliothèque is the exception in weight, plum and cinnamon over leather, birch woods and vanilla. Rose Of No Man's Land keeps a damask rose lifted by pink pepper; Black Saffron sets saffron and pomelo against black violet and leather.

Its bottles are plain, with a magnetic cap, and the core Eau de Parfums come in 50 and 100 ml. Which Byredo sample should I try first?
Bal d'Afrique if you want the lively, fruity-floral face of the house; Mojave Ghost if you prefer something soft and powdery; Gypsy Water if you like incense and pine with a warm base. Those three show how differently the house can use the same quiet style.
Are Byredo perfumes unisex?
Yes. Every Byredo perfume we decant is presented as unisex, from the white-linen Blanche to the leathery Bibliothèque. Roses, violets and musks are used without a gender label; a sample on your own skin is the only test that counts.
How does Bal d'Afrique Absolu differ from Bal d'Afrique?
The Absolu de Parfum reworks the original with more gourmand depth: a praline heart between bergamot, lemon and blackcurrant and a cedar and vetiver base, with black amber carrying the sweetness to the end. Sample both side by side if you already like the Eau de Parfum.

Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.
