Sharp fruit and peel
Bergamot, lemon and blackcurrant open it, with black amber listed beside them in the brand's top notes. The citrus is crisp and the blackcurrant slightly tart and dark. It is the bright half of the contrast Byredo says it wants to sharpen.

A sweet middle
Praline sits at the centre between violet and musks. The nutty sweetness is the new emphasis of this version, and the violet and musks soften it so it feels smooth instead of sugary. Here you will know quickly whether gourmand notes are your thing.

Cedar to hold it up
Cedarwood and vetiver form the base, dry and a little earthy, giving the sweetness a firm place to rest. The brand's description ends on warm black amber carrying the gourmand effect, and in the drydown the wood keeps the picture upright.

Wear it first on a cool evening, one application to the neck or the inside of the wrist, since an Absolu de Parfum is a concentrated format. Then wear it once in daylight to see how the citrus carries into the sweetness. Compare how you feel at the start with how you feel late in the day.

Byredo lists it as woody and genderless. It is aimed at people who like a sweet, gourmand perfume but want some structure around it. If you generally prefer dry, green or purely fresh scents, the praline may come as a surprise, which a sample helps you find out.

What do I get with the sample?
A 10 ml decant of Bal d'Afrique Absolu, filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle into a glass spray vial and labelled by us. It is not a brand sample, and Byredo is not involved.
Is it very sweet?
Praline is the heart and black amber adds warmth, so sweetness is a theme. Citrus on top and cedar and vetiver below keep it from turning heavy, though skin chemistry has the final say.
What does Absolu de Parfum mean here?
Byredo uses the name for its own concentration and presents it as stronger than its Eau de Parfum. Treat it as a concentrated format and apply a little at a time while you test.
Does it work as a daytime scent?

Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham and turns memories and emotions into scent: a dance in Africa, a desert flower, a library, a nomadic life. The Eau de Parfums are built on a small library of raw materials, ambrette, sandalwood, violet, vetiver, and most of them stay transparent and close to the skin. That restraint is exactly why a sample helps: on paper they can seem simple, on skin they settle into something personal.
