Le Labo samples

Le Labo began in 2006 as a small laboratory in Nolita, New York, opened by two friends, Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi. The names follow a formula, a raw material plus a number, and they rarely tell the whole story: Santal 33 is as much cardamom, iris and violet as sandalwood, and in Patchouli 24 birch smoke takes over. That is why samples matter with this house. A 10 ml decant shows what the name leaves out, on your skin, over several days.

About Le Labo

Which Le Labo samples to try first

Santal 33 is the usual starting point: Australian sandalwood and cedarwood, smoky, with cardamom, iris and violet in front. Another 13 takes ambroxyde, a synthetic animal musk in the brand's words, and adds only jasmine and moss. Thé Noir 29 swings from bergamot, fig and bay leaves to a dry base of cedarwood, vetiver, musk and black tea leaves. Bergamote 22 is the fresh one, bergamot with petit grain and grapefruit over amber, musk and vetiver.

Tea, rose, rain and smoke

Thé Matcha 26 is a matcha tea accord with creamy fig, vetiver, cedar woods and bitter orange. Rose 31 makes the Centifolia rose of Grasse spicy and woody with cumin, olibanum, cedar and gaïac wood. Baie 19 aims at rain on dry earth through juniper berry, patchouli and green leaves. Patchouli 24 is birch smoke softened by vanilla, Tonka 25 a resinous warmth of tonka absolute, styrax and musks, Labdanum 18 a blend of ambery and musky notes.

A label with a place and a date

The house manifesto argues for hand work and for fewer, more soulful perfumes. Every bottle is labelled with a name, a place and the date it was prepared, and the brand says where key materials come from: Kimberley in Australia for sandalwood, Grasse for roses, Reggio Calabria for bergamot. Our decants are filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle and labelled by us; they are not official brand samples, and Le Labo is not involved.

Frequently asked

Which Le Labo sample should I try first?

Santal 33 if you want the house at its most recognisable, Another 13 if you prefer a musky, mossy scent built on one molecule. Thé Noir 29 suits people who like dry, leafy woods, Bergamote 22 those who want citrus. Two per day is enough, so each gets room.

What do the numbers in Le Labo names mean?

The word names the principal raw material, and the number is generally explained as the count of ingredients in the formula, as in Santal 33. The word is not a promise about the smell: the brand itself says patchouli is hard to spot in Patchouli 24.

Are Le Labo perfumes unisex?

Nearly all of them are listed as unisex, including Santal 33, Another 13, Rose 31 and Tonka 25. The brand says of Rose 31 that it turns the Grasse rose into a scent anyone can wear, which sums up the approach of the Classic Collection.

Rudy Review of the FragranceGems shop
  • Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.
