What the rose is asked to do
Most rose perfumes ask for softness. Le Labo asks for assertiveness instead, and the Centifolia rose is its starting point. The brand names Grasse in France as the home of its roses. Spend the first minutes noticing whether the flower feels firm or sweet to you.

Spice, resin and wood
Cumin adds a warm, slightly earthy spice, olibanum a resinous, incense-like dryness, and cedar a straight, dry wood. A touch of amber warms the edges. The brand calls these notes warm, spicy and woody. They are what stops the rose from becoming soft.

Gaïac, cistus, musk
Gaïac wood and cistus sit over a musky background, which the brand says brings a hint of mystery. Gaïac is smoky and dry, cistus resinous and balsamic. The brand gives no top, heart and base, so expect the notes to work together rather than appear in stages.

About Le Labo
Le Labo began in 2006 as a small laboratory in Nolita, New York, opened by two friends, Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi. The names follow a formula, a raw material plus a number, and they rarely tell the whole story: Santal 33 is as much cardamom, iris and violet as sandalwood, and in Patchouli 24 birch smoke takes over. That is why samples matter with this house. A 10 ml decant shows what the name leaves out, on your skin, over several days.
