Tea leaf, fig and cedarwood on dry skin

Thé Noir 29 is Le Labo's ode to the black tea leaf and the craft around it, composed by Frank Voelkl and dated 2015. The house lists seven materials: bergamot, fig, bay leaves, cedarwood, vetiver, musk and black tea leaves. Tea is hard to picture in a perfume, so it is worth smelling it on your own skin before you buy a full bottle.

On the skin

How it unfolds

  1. Light and deep

The brand describes a swing between two poles. Bergamot, fig and bay leaves stand for lightness: a citrus sparkle, a green fig, a dry herbal leaf. Cedarwood, vetiver and musk supply the depth, and the scent moves between the two.

  2. The tea itself

A special extraction of black tea leaves shapes the drydown, which the brand calls dry and leafy. This is what makes a fresh, woody arrangement come across as tea rather than as fruit or flowers. It is also the part that is most personal on skin.

  3. Hay and tobacco, in words

Le Labo adds that the drydown carries hay and tobacco nuances. Neither is listed among the seven materials, so they are descriptions of the leafy dryness and not extra notes. Beneath them cedarwood, vetiver and musk keep the ending woody and quiet.

Testing it

How to test it, for whom and why

How to test it

Wear Thé Noir 29 on an ordinary working day: it is dry and calm, so the test is whether it stays pleasant at a desk or on the train. Spring or mild autumn weather shows the lighter materials best. Try it twice, once with a light hand and once with a little more.

Who it is for

People who want tea in a perfume as a dry, leafy note rather than a sweet one, and who like woods and vetiver without heavy sweetness. Unisex, and a fit for anyone who finds sweet fragrances tiring. If you want an obviously fruity or sweet scent, this is not it.

Why try Le Labo Thé Noir 29 as a sample first

Tea notes vary on skin: dry and elegant on one wearer, grassy or hay-like on another. The brand describes hay and tobacco nuances, which not everyone wants. Ten millilitres lets you see how the extraction behaves on you before buying 100 ml.

Questions

Frequently asked

What exactly is in the sample?

10 ml of Thé Noir 29 Eau de Parfum, filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle into a glass spray vial and labelled by us. It is not a brand sample, and Le Labo is not involved.

Is it a sweet tea scent?

No. The brand talks about a dry, leafy drydown, and the list has no sweet material. Bergamot and fig add lightness, while the woods and musk keep it dry.

Is it fresh or warm?

The brand's own picture is a swing between the lightness of the first three materials and the depth of the last three, so it is somewhere in between.

Does it have a pyramid?

The brand names seven materials as a single list rather than as top, heart and base, so we show them the same way and do not assign tiers.

About Le Labo

Le Labo began in 2006 as a small laboratory in Nolita, New York, opened by two friends, Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi. The names follow a formula, a raw material plus a number, and they rarely tell the whole story: Santal 33 is as much cardamom, iris and violet as sandalwood, and in Patchouli 24 birch smoke takes over. That is why samples matter with this house. A 10 ml decant shows what the name leaves out, on your skin, over several days.

  • Opened in New York in 2006 by friends Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi, first on Elizabeth Street
  • A name is a raw material plus a number, as in Santal 33
  • Bottles are labelled with a place, a preparation date and a name

Rudy Review of the FragranceGems shop
    • Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.
