Which Fragrance Du Bois samples to try first

Sirène, by Nanako Ogi, is the current favourite: cherry and pink pepper over oud, incense and a lactonic note, ending on moss, benzoin and cypriol. Minuit et Demi, by Stéphane Bengana, is the gourmand, cardamom and pimento into coffee and caramel on vetiver and vanilla. Santal Complet is the soft one, coconut and lemon over violet on sandalwood, amber and vanilla. Sahraa is the oud classic: rose, geranium and jasmine over saffron, amber and oud.

What to expect on skin

Parfum concentration means a slow, warm arc: the Intense perfumes open with fruit or citrus and settle into resins, vanilla and the house's 'Pure Organic Vintage Oud'. Oud Jaune Intense is the sunny one, monoi, pineapple and white flowers; Oud Bleu Intense is cooler, mandarin and cardamom over frankincense and myrrh; Oud Orange Intense is coconut and bourbon vanilla with a trace of oud. Lucius, for men, sets bergamot and cedarwood over tonka.

The house says it was among the first to commercialise oud in perfumery, pairing it with unexpected notes, and that its oud is produced sustainably under an exclusive supply agreement. Each perfume has its own master perfumer, from Nanako Ogi and Caroline Sabas to Gaël Montero, who signs Cavort and Tropiques.
