Which Maison Francis Kurkdjian sample to try first

Baccarat Rouge 540 is what most people ask about, but the house has a wardrobe. Seven samples, including Eau de Parfum and Extrait pairs, with a note map.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Grand Soir Eau de Parfum sample

Maison Francis Kurkdjian was co-founded in Paris in 2009 by the perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya. Chaya runs the company and Kurkdjian supplies the creative vision. The house thinks of its collection as a fragrance wardrobe, scents to wear according to mood, and describes its codes as purity, sophistication, timelessness and a reinvented classicism. Kurkdjian had opened a bespoke perfume workshop of his own in 2001. Most people arrive at the Maison Francis Kurkdjian samples through one name, Baccarat Rouge 540, and it is a good place to begin, but it is only one hanger in the wardrobe.

Seven samples, ordered by ratings

We ordered these by the number of ratings each perfume has on Parfumo, as collected by NicheGems, and added 724 as a lighter contrast. Notes appear as the house names them, often as one list without tiers.

Grand Soir, an Eau de Parfum, is the evening one: cinnamon tree, vanilla amber accord, ciste labdanum and lavender. The brand describes the moment before the city lights come on, with a warm amber and vanilla base.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum was created with the crystal maker Baccarat for its 250th anniversary. The recorded notes are Hedione, Ambroxan and saffron, and the brand describes a luminous woody, ambery and floral scent.

Gentle Fluidity Silver and Gentle Fluidity Gold are the pair the brand builds from the same six ingredients: nutmeg, vanilla, juniper berries, amber woods, coriander seeds and musks. Silver puts nutmeg and amber woods first, Gold puts coriander, musks and vanilla first.

What the list shares

The brand's product pages explain each key raw material, naturals such as saffron, jasmine, rose and sandalwood next to aroma-molecules such as Hedione and Ambroxan, and that is visible here. Vanilla amber runs through Grand Soir and Oud Satin Mood, vanilla also through Gentle Fluidity. Saffron links Baccarat Rouge 540 in both concentrations, and Ambroxan sits in both too. Jasmine links Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait and 724. Musk appears in Gentle Fluidity Silver and Gold and in 724. The map divides the seven into the amber-vanilla group, the oud and rose pair, and the clean florals. To follow single notes, use saffron, oud and vanilla.

Because several perfumes exist in two concentrations here, the Extrait samples are worth a page of their own. For cold weather, the winter guide places Grand Soir and Oud Satin Mood among other warm scents, and the article on niche, designer and Arabic samples places the house among others.

One way to use the seven is to treat them as three questions. Do you want amber and vanilla after dark, which Grand Soir and Oud Satin Mood answer? Do you want the airy, saffron-led glow of Baccarat Rouge 540? Or do you want something near the skin, which is what 724 and the Gentle Fluidity pair are for? Answer those with one sample each and the rest of the wardrobe becomes much easier to read.

When a bottle is worth it

Choose a bottle when one of these has been your own pick on several occasions. Main fragrances come in 35, 70 and 200 ml. Our vial is filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle and labelled by us; the house is not involved and it is not a brand sample. The first perfume above is found in full at Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540. To plan the vials, the sample set page helps, and the FAQ answers the practical questions.

FAQ

Should I start with Baccarat Rouge 540?

It is the name most people search for, so many do. Try the Eau de Parfum first. If you like it, the Extrait is a separate sample that shows what a different recipe does, since the recorded notes differ.

What do Gentle Fluidity Gold and Silver have in common?

The brand makes both from the same six ingredients, juniper berries, nutmeg, coriander, musks, amber wood and vanilla, dosed into two silhouettes. Silver is the aromatic, woody one and Gold the ambery, musky one.

Why are the notes listed without top, heart and base?

For most of these perfumes the house names its key materials without assigning tiers. We record them the way it does, and we do not move notes between tiers.
