Penhaligon's samples

Penhaligon's has 'British Perfumers, Established 1870' in its header and a royal warrant crest in its logo, and it sorts its perfumes like a library: Portraits with their figurine-topped bottles, Trade Routes, British Tales. The house itself shows only three key notes per fragrance, so descriptions stay brief and characters do the talking. Whether Lord George or Halfeti suits you is a question for your skin, and a 10 ml decant answers it.

About Penhaligon's

Which Penhaligon's samples to try first

The Tragedy of Lord George is the patriarch of the Portraits: ambrox, rum and tonka bean, with shaving soap in the brand's description. Halfeti, from Trade Routes, tangles grapefruit and bergamot with Levantine spice, rose and an oud accord. In The Blazing Mister Sam black pepper and cardamom meet cedarwood and patchouli. Luna is the gentle one, an Eau de Toilette of orange, bergamot, a jasmine accord, rose and fir balsam.

British Tales and one rule-breaker

Blenheim Bouquet, first created for the Duke of Marlborough, is as dry as its notes suggest: lemon, lavender and pine. Juniper Sling is the gin lover's Eau de Toilette, juniper berry over black pepper and vetiver. Endymion, an Eau de Cologne, moves from bergamot and lavandin to suede, a coffee accord, geranium and cedarwood. Changing Constance breaks the pattern with cardamom and pimento over a salted caramel accord and a tobacco accord.

Established 1870

The house was founded in London by William Henry Penhaligon, a Cornish-born barber. Its collections give each perfume a setting: Portraits are character-driven eaux de parfum, Trade Routes look abroad, British Tales stay at home. Concentrations run from Eau de Cologne to Eau de Parfum. Our decants are filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle and labelled by us; they are not official brand samples, and the house is not involved.

Frequently asked

Which Penhaligon's sample should I try first?

The Tragedy of Lord George for a warm take on barbershop elegance with rum and tonka bean, Halfeti for rose, spice and oud. If you prefer fresh and dry, start with Blenheim Bouquet or Juniper Sling. Luna is the soft floral of the selection.

Are Penhaligon's perfumes for men or women?

It differs per perfume. In our data The Tragedy of Lord George, The Blazing Mister Sam, Blenheim Bouquet and Endymion are men's fragrances, Luna and Changing Constance women's, and Halfeti and Juniper Sling unisex. The characters are a guide, not a rule.

What are the Portraits?

A collection of eaux de parfum built around fictional characters, each bottle topped with a figurine. We decant three of them: The Tragedy of Lord George, the patriarch; The Blazing Mister Sam, an American abroad; and Changing Constance, a very modern woman.

Rudy Review of the FragranceGems shop
  • Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.
