Rum, tonka bean and Ambrox in a noble portrait
The Tragedy of Lord George is Penhaligon's portrait of a noble patriarch who shows up smelling of shaving soap and warm rum, with a hint of secrets behind tradition. Only three key notes are named: Ambrox, rum and tonka bean. Its own summary reads rich, noble, deceptive and woody, which is a lot to judge from words alone.

The composition
These notes are recorded without a pyramid.
On the skin
The brand says Lord George arrives with shaving soap and warming rum. Rum gives a dark, boozy warmth closer to heat than to sugar, and it sets the tone. Only three notes are named and no order, so think of one blend rather than a sequence of steps.
Tonka bean contributes a soft, dry sweetness that softens the rum and stops short of dessert, with a smooth, faintly creamy feel. It stays in the background so that the rum keeps the lead, which is a balance to check on your own skin.
Ambrox is an amber-wood material, clean, dry and slightly salty, which adds diffusion and a calm trail. That matches the brand's word woody although no wood is listed, and the result is meant to be warm and polished rather than heavy and sweet.
Testing it
Cool weather and evenings suit it: dinner, a concert, a formal occasion. Apply it to neck and chest and let the rum settle before judging, because the warmth builds by itself. Test it once in the evening and once on a cold day, and see whether the boozy tone feels elegant or too heavy for you.
In Penhaligon's range Lord George counts as a perfume for men. A sample is for readers of warm, slightly boozy scents who enjoy a smooth woody finish without florals. People who lean to fresh, citrus or green perfumes may find it heavy, but if you like character with a little shadow, it is worth the trial.
Rum notes divide opinion: some find them cosy, others cloying or too close to a bar. The bottle, topped with a gilded stag's head, says nothing about that. Our 10 ml decant is filled by FragranceGems from the original 75 ml bottle and labelled by us; the house is not involved.
What you receive
We start with a full bottle of the perfume. Nothing is diluted, mixed or added.
Filled by hand into a clean glass spray vial of 2, 5 or 10 ml and closed straight after filling.
Our own label names the brand, the perfume, the concentration and the size.

Warmly sweet, not candy-like. Rum and tonka bean give a smooth, boozy sweetness, and Ambrox dries it out.
Ambrox, rum and tonka bean. Penhaligon's gives no full pyramid, so we claim no top, heart or base order.
Yes, it is the Eau de Parfum from the Portraits line, without the stag-head stopper. FragranceGems fills the vial from the original bottle.
The brand
Penhaligon's has 'British Perfumers, Established 1870' in its header and a royal warrant crest in its logo, and it sorts its perfumes like a library: Portraits with their figurine-topped bottles, Trade Routes, British Tales. The house itself shows only three key notes per fragrance, so descriptions stay brief and characters do the talking. Whether Lord George or Halfeti suits you is a question for your skin, and a 10 ml decant answers it.

incredible fast delivery l. the fragrance itself its magnificent, the dry down woody base, is intoxicating. it last on me 10 hours plus. great service great fragrance
Good experience overall. Fast shipping without any incidents. Prices are good as well.
Really happy of my purchase. Serious seller, quality products, fast shipping, large catalog. I will order a lot of more !
Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.
Great shop with a fantastic selection and fast shipping. I was very happy with my order. It would have been a nice touch to receive a little sample, especially as I ordered two full-size products. ;)
Placing the order was very easy. Shipping was very fast. I am completely satisfied.
Plenty of perfumes and very good perfumes. Fast shipping. One negative. Expensive shipping from Netherlands to Greece
