Dry lemon, lavender and pine

Blenheim Bouquet is one of Penhaligon's oldest fragrances, first made for the Duke of Marlborough and dated to 1902, and it is an Eau de Toilette. The brand calls it dry and fresh, like the best gin or the best of British humour. Three notes carry it: lemon, lavender and pine. A decant shows whether a scent with that much history still fits your wardrobe.

On the skin

How it unfolds

  1. Lemon without sugar

Lemon opens it, sharp and clean, with the dry brightness of peel rather than juice. Nothing sweet sits around it. This is the cold, tart, precise side the brand compares to gin, and it sets a tone the other two notes keep.

  2. Lavender in the heart

Lavender takes over in the middle, herbal, aromatic and clean. It softens the lemon without making it sweet. After the sparkle of the start, this stage feels calmer, greener and more settled, which is easy to judge once the first minutes have passed.

  3. Pine to finish

Pine ends the scent with a green, resinous coolness. It is dry and a little woody, and it gives the fresh opening a steady place to rest. The result stays brisk from first spray to last, with almost no sweetness anywhere in between.

Testing it

How to test it, for whom and why

How to test it

Wear the decant on a bright spring or summer day, and for work, which is what the tags suggest. As an Eau de Toilette it is lightly built, so spray generously enough to judge it and retry later in the day. Notice whether the pine dries down clean or sharp on your skin.

Who it is for

The house lists Blenheim Bouquet among its fragrances for men. It suits anyone who prefers dry, fresh, aromatic scents to sweet ones and likes a perfume with some history. If you are after warmth, vanilla or gourmand notes, it is not the one, and a sample will tell you in minutes.

Why try Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet as a sample first

The house puts it at 1902 and says it was first made for a duke, which is a lot of heritage to live up to. Dry, aromatic colognes are a matter of taste, and 100 ml is a lot of dryness to buy blind. Our 10 ml decant is filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why does the brand mention gin?

The house describes the scent as dry and fresh, like the best gin or the best of British humour. It is a way of saying crisp, tart and understated.

Which notes does it have?

Three key notes: lemon at the top, lavender in the heart and pine at the base. The pyramid is short, so each of them is easy to follow.

Is this decant made by Penhaligon's?

No, it is not an official brand sample. FragranceGems fills the 10 ml glass spray vial from the original bottle and labels it itself, and Penhaligon's is not involved.

The brand

About Penhaligon's

Penhaligon's has 'British Perfumers, Established 1870' in its header and a royal warrant crest in its logo, and it sorts its perfumes like a library: Portraits with their figurine-topped bottles, Trade Routes, British Tales. The house itself shows only three key notes per fragrance, so descriptions stay brief and characters do the talking. Whether Lord George or Halfeti suits you is a question for your skin, and a 10 ml decant answers it.

  • Founded in London by the Cornish-born barber William Henry Penhaligon
  • The brand's own header says 'British Perfumers, Established 1870'
  • Collections include Portraits, Trade Routes and British Tales

Rudy Review of the FragranceGems shop
    • Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.

Henrik Review of the FragranceGems shop
