Does a decant smell the same as the bottle?

A decant holds the same perfume as the bottle it came from. Small differences in the spray, in air and in how the vial is kept can change how it feels, and here is what to check.

Surrati Dream Valley sample

Does a decant smell the same as the bottle? It holds the same perfume, taken from the original bottle with nothing added or diluted, so yes, in the sense that matters most. What can differ is the way it reaches your skin and the condition it is in: the pump of a small vial may give a different mist, the vial may hold more air as it empties, and heat or light can change a perfume in any container. This article explains the differences and how to check them.

The liquid is the same

A decant is filled from a full bottle of the perfume named on the label, as How we fill your sample describes. We buy the full bottle, fill by hand with clean equipment, close the vial at once and label it. It is not an official brand sample and the house is not involved, but the perfume inside is the perfume the house made. What is a decant covers the basics.

The pump is not the same

The sprayer on a perfume bottle is built for that bottle. The pump on a small vial is a different part, and it can produce a slightly different mist: finer or coarser, wider or narrower. A different mist can change how a perfume feels on the skin, how fast the top evaporates and how it reads in the first minutes. This is the most common reason for a difference between a vial and a bottle, and it is usually small. How to use a perfume sample vial shows how to get an even spray.

Air and light matter

A small vial holds more air in proportion as it empties, and air, together with heat and light, is what changes a perfume. Bright, fresh openings, with citrus, herbs or green notes, are the first to dull. Surrati Dream Valley is recorded with bergamot, lemon and mint on top, rose, jasmine and orange blossom in the heart and amber, musk and sandalwood in the base. Khadlaj Shiyaaka Sky is recorded with lemon verbena, bergamot and mandarin on top, green accord, neroli, orange blossom and geranium in the heart and musk, ambroxan, sandalwood and vetiver in the base.

Jo Milano Paris Game of Spades Emerald, a Parfum, is recorded with bergamot, ginger and grapefruit on top, orange blossom, neroli and ginger essence in the heart and musk and ambrette in the base. Maison Asrar Regent is recorded with bergamot, grapefruit, magnolia and jasmine on top, orris root, spicy notes and ginger in the heart and cedarwood, amber, musk and patchouli in the base. All four lead with bright materials, which is where age or a warm shelf is noticed first.

Batches vary

Two bottles of the same perfume can differ a little, because of the batch, the age of the stock and how they were kept. A decant reflects the bottle it was filled from. If you later buy a bottle from another batch, you may notice small differences. This is normal and is not specific to decants.

When to be suspicious

Most differences are small and explained by the pump, the air or the batch. Be more careful if the liquid has clearly darkened, if the opening smells sour or metallic, if the base smells different from the first time, or if the vial has sat in a warm place for months. In these cases the vial has probably changed, not the perfume in the bottle. A fresh vial, or a comparison with a full bottle of the same batch, settles the question. If you doubt what arrived, tell us with the order number and a photo, and we correct our mistakes at our cost.

How to check

  • Spray the vial once away from your skin to clear the pump, then test on skin.
  • Compare with the notes you wrote the first time you wore it.
  • Look at the colour. A clearly darker liquid than before is a warning, see does perfume expire.
  • Check where the vial has been kept, away from sun and heat.
  • If a vial seems wrong on arrival, write to us with a photo of the label, and we will put it right.

FAQ

Is a decant the same perfume as the bottle?

Yes, it is perfume taken from the original bottle, with nothing added or diluted. What differs is the container and the pump.

Why does my decant seem weaker than the bottle?

A different pump gives a different mist, and a vial that has been warm, in light or half empty for a while may have changed. Check how it has been kept.

Can two bottles of the same perfume smell different?

Sometimes. Batches can vary slightly. A decant reflects the bottle it was filled from.
