What is a decant?

A decant is perfume moved from its original bottle into a small glass vial. What that means, how it is made and what a good one tells you.

A decant is a small amount of perfume that has been transferred from its original bottle into a smaller container, usually a glass spray vial. The liquid is the perfume as the house made it. Only the vial and the label are different. That is why a decant lets you wear a perfume for days or weeks without owning the full bottle.

Decant, sample, Abfüllung: one idea, several words

In English the word is decant. Dutch shoppers say "decant" or "sample", and German shoppers say "Abfüllung", "Probe" or "Duftprobe". All of them describe perfume poured from a large bottle into a small one. On DecantGems we say sample for what you order and decant for the way it is made. The glossary gives short definitions of these words and of the others you meet on a sample page.

How a decant is made

The original bottle is opened and the perfume is moved across by hand, with clean equipment, into an empty vial that has its own pump. Nothing is added and nothing is diluted. The vial is closed straight away and labelled with the house, the perfume, the concentration and the size. Our own steps are described on How we fill your sample.

Take Rayhaan Aquatica. The notes recorded for it are lime, coconut milk, bergamot and mandarin in the top, sugarcane, hibiscus, jasmine and gardenia in the heart, and rum, musk, tonka bean and patchouli in the base. The 10 ml vial holds that same perfume with that same pyramid, only in less glass.

What a decant is not

A decant is not an official brand sample. It does not come from the house, it has no brand box or leaflet, and the house is not involved in filling it. We are not affiliated with the brands whose perfumes we fill. Nor is a decant a lighter or reworked version of the perfume: it comes out of the same bottle you would otherwise buy, so what you judge is the real thing.

It has limits too. You do not receive the bottle, the cap or the box, and the spray of a small vial will not feel exactly like the atomiser of the full bottle, because the pump is different. If those things matter to you, the full bottle is the better route once you know you like the scent.

Why people choose a decant

  • To test before committing. A perfume that sounds right on a list can still feel wrong on your skin. A decant lets you find that out over several days.
  • To compare. Three or four vials teach you more than one bottle when you are choosing between scents. The sample set builder is made for this.
  • To reach perfumes that are hard to find nearby. Niche samples and Arabic samples are the usual places to begin.
  • To travel light. A small glass vial slips into a coat pocket.

Velixir Icarus shows why testing helps. Its pyramid starts with pear, Calabrian bergamot and mandarin, moves to orange blossom, Georgywood and ginger, and ends on musk, Ambrofix™, Akigalawood and cedar. A list like that says what is in the perfume, not how the woody and musky part will sit on you. A few days of wearing the decant does.

Houses differ, the idea does not. Xerjoff XJ 1861 Naxos is recorded with lemon, bergamot, lavender and incense from Oman on top, jasmine sambac, honey, cinnamon and cashmere in the heart, and vanilla, tobacco leaf and tonka bean in the base. Bujairami Hectic opens on citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange, moves through Nigerian ginger, Ceylon cinnamon and Tunisian neroli, and rests on Ambroxan, guaiac wood, olibanum and Chinese black tea. Two very different houses, one niche and one Arabic, and both are filled in the same way.

What a good decant tells you

Whoever sells a decant should be able to say, without being asked, who filled it, from what, and how it is labelled. Look for a clear statement that the perfume comes from the original bottle, a label with house, perfume, concentration and size, a glass vial with a working pump, and an honest line that the sample is not an official brand product. The article on buying perfume samples in Europe turns this into a checklist.

Where to go next

To see how a decant differs from a tester or a miniature, read decant, tester, brand sample or miniature. To learn how far a vial goes, see how many sprays are in a sample. When you are ready to try something, the 10 ml samples and the full list in all samples are the places to look, and the scent finder narrows them down in a few questions. Everything else is answered in the FAQ.

FAQ

What does decant mean?

A decant is perfume that has been moved from its original bottle into a smaller container. The word comes from decanting, which is pouring a liquid from one vessel into another. In perfume it almost always means a small glass vial filled for testing or travel.

Is a decant the same perfume as the one in the bottle?

Yes. The vial holds the perfume from the original bottle, undiluted and with nothing added. What differs is the container, the pump and the label, which is ours.

Is a decant an official brand sample?

No. The house is not involved in filling it and we are not affiliated with the brands. We use their names only to say which perfume is in the vial.
