How do you choose a perfume for women? Start from what you already love, pick a family and a strength, and keep the day you have in mind in view. After that, try a few samples on your own skin. The tag on a perfume, "women" in our records, is how a house or a seller files it, and it guides without limiting: many people choose across ranges. The perfume that works is the one you enjoy wearing and notice, with pleasure, at the end of an ordinary day.

Begin with what you already love

Look at the things you buy for their smell: a hand cream, a candle, a tea, a soap. Is it rose, vanilla, fig, citrus, lavender, wood? Those everyday preferences predict more than a quiz does. Write down five you love and anything that gives you a headache. Perfume families follow these tastes: floral, fresh, woody, gourmand and musky, and the scent finder turns them into a shortlist.

Choose the family

Floral perfumes lean on rose, jasmine, peony or iris. Fresh ones lean on citrus, green and water. Woody ones on cedar, sandalwood and vetiver. Gourmand on vanilla, caramel and cocoa. Musky ones keep close to the skin. You will probably prefer one or two, and perhaps dislike one outright. If a family is new to you, try one sample from it before you rule it out.

Think about the day

Decide where you wear it most. For work, a quiet perfume is kinder to colleagues and easier to forget you are wearing; our office samples guide goes into that. For evenings you can go warmer and deeper, see evening samples. Many women keep two: one for the warm months and one for the cold.

Reading the notes without being fooled

A note list is a filter, not a verdict. If it has a note you dislike, skip the perfume. If it has several you love, it is worth a sample. But a note with the same name can smell different in different perfumes: a rose in one can be fresh and watery, in another dark and spicy. That is why the sample matters. When you try a perfume, compare what you smell with the list and see which notes you can actually find.

Common mistakes

The first is choosing by a name or a bottle. The second is trusting one spray on paper. The third is buying a bottle because a friend loves it, since her skin is not yours. The fourth is giving up after one disappointment. Taste takes a few tries to find, and every sample tells you something, even when the answer is no.

Test it properly

Wear a candidate for a day on clean skin before you decide, because a perfume that charms in the first minutes can change by evening. How to test perfume on your skin has the routine. If you have sensitive skin, do a small patch first, as can you test perfume with sensitive skin describes. If you cannot decide between two, how to find a signature scent gives a plan.

Where to go next

Browse samples tagged for women, the floral family or the unisex samples. Looking for the other audience tag? How to choose a perfume for men covers it. The FAQ answers practical questions about our vials.

FAQ

Do I have to choose from the women range?

No. The tag reflects how a house or seller classifies a perfume. Many people choose across ranges, and unisex samples widen the choice.

Are floral perfumes the only option?

Not at all. Florals are one family among many. Woody, fresh, gourmand and musky perfumes are all worn by women, and the labels do not limit you.

How do I know a perfume is not too strong for work?

Wear it once at home in the same way you would at work and ask someone to smell it at arm's length. If they notice it only when close, it is quiet enough.
