How do you find a signature scent?

A signature scent is a perfume people associate with you. A four-week plan with samples to find one, from a wide start to a narrow final.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian 724 Eau de Parfum sample

How do you find a signature scent? Start wide and narrow slowly. Try six to eight samples from different families, wear each for a couple of days, rate them, look for the pattern in what you rated highest, then bring two finalists into the weeks that follow before you commit. A signature scent is the perfume that people associate with you and that you reach for without thinking. It cannot be chosen from a description, only recognised by living with it, which is what a sample plan is for.

Week one: start wide

Choose six to eight samples that differ from each other: something fresh, something floral, something woody, something warm and sweet, something quiet. If you have no idea where to start, the scent finder offers a shortlist, and which perfume suits me gives questions to answer first. The goal this week is not to find the one, but to map your taste.

Here is an example set. Maison Francis Kurkdjian 724 is an Eau de Parfum recorded with bergamot and aldehydes on top, grandiflorum jasmine absolute, sweet pea and mock orange in the heart and sandalwood and white musk in the base, a fresh floral musk.

Mykonos Inception, an Extrait de Parfum, is recorded with bergamot, ginger, orange and lemon on top, neroli, cinnamon, black tea and biga flower in the heart and guaiac wood, musk, cedarwood and Lorenox™ in the base.

Weeks one and two: wear and rate

Wear one a day, following how to test perfume on your skin, and write a line plus a mark from one to five. Do not wear two at once. Give each a second day if it surprises you, as impressions change with weather. Keep the log tidy, see how to organise perfume samples.

Week three: find the pattern

Lay the marks side by side. Do your fours and fives share a family, a note, a mood? Maybe the best-rated ones are all woody, or all have musk in the base. That pattern is your taste, and it points to the next round: pick two or three new samples inside the pattern, and one outside it as a check. This is also the time to stop buying new ideas and start choosing between old ones.

Week four: two finalists

Pick two. Wear one for several days, then the other, and note in which situations each appeals: work, evenings, weekends, rain, sun. A signature scent should work on an ordinary day, not only on special ones. Notice also which you forget to put on and which you miss when you do not.

Signs you have found it

You stop thinking about the perfume when you put it on, which is a sign it fits. People mention it, or you notice when someone else wears the same one. You feel slightly underdressed without it. And when you open a new sample, you catch yourself comparing it with this one. None of these is a rule, but together they tell you that your search has become a choice, and that the time for a larger size has come.

Commit, but not forever

When one of the two earns its place, move up a size, or buy the bottle. A larger decant, see which sample size, is a final step before a bottle. Keep a second or third perfume for other seasons, because a signature does not have to be the only one. Seasons change what you want, as summer samples and winter samples show.

Where to go next

If you buy for someone else, perfume samples as a gift uses the same idea. To assemble your test set, see how to build a sample set and the sample set builder. Browse all samples and keep the FAQ nearby.

FAQ

Does a signature scent have to be the only perfume I wear?

No. Many people keep one signature and a few others for seasons and moods. The signature is the one you reach for when you do not want to think.

How many samples should I try?

Six to eight is a good start. Fewer and you may miss the right one, more and your notes become a blur.

Can a signature scent change over time?

Yes. Taste shifts, and so do life and climate. A signature is something you keep for as long as it fits.
