Water fruit and green
The listed top is a watery melon note, vegetal notes and the fresh side of tuberose. The first minutes are therefore cool, juicy and a little green rather than heavy, which is not what many people expect from this flower.

The animal turn
The house speaks of an animalic character carried by camphor and dark spices, and its published note list gives no heart. This is the moment when the amount of tuberose absolute becomes obvious, and the moment most likely to decide for or against the perfume.

Milk and musk
The base pairs the milky side of tuberose with musk, while the brand's description also brings in white musk. Together they smooth the earlier stages into a creamy finish near the skin, although tuberose stays the main voice from start to end.

This is concentrated tuberose, so begin with one application at the chest or the nape rather than on the wrists. Try it on a warm spring evening, outdoors if possible, then again indoors to see how it fills a room. Give the animalic middle time before you form an opinion.

Does it stay fresh?
Only at the start. After the cool, melon-like opening the animalic middle arrives, and the ending turns milky and soft with musk.
Why does the note list skip the heart?
Frederic Malle's own page gives only top and base, so we show exactly that. The house describes the middle in prose instead, mentioning camphor, dark spices and an animalic side.
How is the Carnal Flower vial filled?
A 10 ml glass spray vial, filled by FragranceGems from the original 100 ml Eau de Parfum bottle and labelled by us. Frederic Malle does not make or supply it.

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle opened in Paris in 2000 with nine perfumes and one idea: the perfumer is the author, so the name goes on the bottle like on a book. Dominique Ropion, Maurice Roucel, Olivia Giacobetti and Jean-Claude Ellena work here with complete freedom, time and materials. The results are generous, often extreme in one direction, a rose pushed to its limit, a tuberose in very high dose, which is exactly why a 10 ml decant beats a quick sniff in a boutique.
