Gourmand perfume samples: where to start

Gourmand perfumes smell edible: milk, popcorn, caramel, cake. Eight gourmand samples from light and playful to rich dessert, sorted by how sweet they go.

Fascent Corn Star sample

Gourmand perfume samples are the most direct answer to a simple question: do you want your perfume to smell edible? Gourmand is the family of notes that suggest food: caramel, milk, almond, vanilla, chocolate, popcorn, cake. It is the most variable family on the shelf, because the same word covers a light, fruity coconut and a heavy, boozy dessert. This guide picks eight from houses outside our Arabic range and sorts them by how sweet they go. For the Arabic side, see sweet Arabic gourmand samples.

Light and playful

Fascent Corn Star is the lightest and the only one tagged light. The top is love pear, coconut water and angelica extract, the heart popcorn, sesame sfe and musky marshmallow, and the base tonka bean and cypriol oil. Popcorn and marshmallow in the heart are the gourmand part, and it is tagged for spring and summer.

Goldfield & Banks Sunset Hour keeps fruit in front. The top is pear, mandarin, desert peach and raspberry, the heart jasmine sambac, green mango, ginger, coconut and pink pepper, and the base sandalwood, salted caramel, vanilla and benzoin. Coconut and mango give a tropical turn, and salted caramel arrives only at the end. It is tagged moderate for summer and autumn.

Soft and milky

Fascent Milky No Way is the creamy one: black pepper and hazelnut milk on top, whipped cream accord and tonka bean in the heart, and sandalwood, amber and cashmere wood below. Black pepper keeps the milk from being sticky.

Penhaligon's Changing Constance is a salted caramel with spice: cardamom and pimento on top, salted caramel accord in the heart, and tobacco accord at the base. It is filed for women and tagged moderate for evenings in autumn and winter.

Rich dessert

Mind Games Queening goes toward vanilla and rum. The top is clean cotton accord, cypress and apple, the heart orris, rum and saffron, and the base whipped vanilla bean, fluffy musk and coconut. It is an Extrait tagged strong.

Mykonos Bonfire Vanilla turns the dessert smoky. Its top reads clove, nutmeg, pink pepper, orange zest and vanilla, the heart smoked wood, pepper, guaiac wood and burnt brown sugar, and the base smoked wood, vanilla, marshmallow and caramel. Smoked wood beside marshmallow and caramel is a clever contrast.

Fascent Crème Brûlante lists its notes in one line: vanilla duos, cake batter accord, almond balm, rum drop, amber wood, benzoin and olibanum. Cake batter and rum drop make it the most pastry-like of the eight, and it is tagged strong.

Essential Parfums Ambre Latte is the creamy amber: almond milk, roasted tonka bean, dulce de leche caramel, vanilla, benzoin, white musks, ambrofix, georgywood, akigalawood and white sandalwood. Almond milk, caramel and white musks make a latte-like softness under a strong tag.

What the eight share

Caramel appears in Sunset Hour, Changing Constance, Bonfire Vanilla and Ambre Latte, and vanilla in Sunset Hour, Queening, Bonfire Vanilla, Crème Brûlante and Ambre Latte, so the two classic sweet notes are the spine of the group. Tonka links Corn Star, Milky No Way and Ambre Latte, almond links Crème Brûlante and Ambre Latte, and rum links Queening and Crème Brûlante. The intensity tags give you a ladder again: one light, three moderate and four strong. A gourmand ladder is worth climbing slowly, because sweetness does not fade as it does with other notes; it builds over the day on warm skin.

If you find the sweet notes pleasant but heavy, follow them toward the dry side, through almond or tonka, where sweetness is softer and drier.

How to choose

Begin with Corn Star or Sunset Hour if you are unsure, and move to Milky No Way or Changing Constance if you like cream and spice. Take Queening, Bonfire Vanilla, Crème Brûlante or Ambre Latte only when you know you like sweetness in quantity. One spray, bare skin, cool weather. The routine is in how to test perfume on skin, and vanilla samples, coffee samples and winter perfume samples continue from here.

The whole family is on the gourmand perfume samples page, with single notes under caramel and almond. Houses here include Fascent and Mind Games. We fill and label each vial ourselves from the original bottle, and the houses are not involved; see how we fill your sample and the FAQ, while sample sets shows how to combine vials.

FAQ

What is a gourmand perfume?

A gourmand perfume is built on notes that suggest food or sweets: vanilla, caramel, milk, almond, chocolate, coffee, popcorn or cake. It can be light and airy or rich and heavy, and the edible note is usually only one part of the picture.

Are gourmand perfumes only for winter?

Most are tagged autumn and winter, because warmth amplifies sweetness. Two in this guide are tagged for summer or spring and summer, and they use fruit and coconut to stay light.

How do I wear a gourmand without smelling like dessert?

Choose one with a counterweight, such as pepper, cypress, rum or incense, and apply one spray. Gourmands that come with spice, such as Bonfire Vanilla or Changing Constance, wear drier than the name suggests.
