Stéphane Humbert Lucas samples

Stéphane Humbert Lucas is a painter and poet before he is a perfumer, a synesthete who says he sees his fragrances in colours. His Paris house makes, in its own words, no marketing concessions: the first collection, 777, launched in 2012 and draws on his travels in the Middle East, and the Serpent collection retells snake legends from Mexico to China. Perfumes built on colour and legend need to be worn to be understood, and a 10 ml decant gives you several evenings to do so.

About Stéphane Humbert Lucas

Which samples to try first

God of Fire, named after the Aztec god Xiuhtecuhtli, covers a warm oud and amber base with mango, lemon, ginger and jasmine. Venom Incarnat is the love potion: blackberry, strawberry and caramel over raspberry and cinnamon, on tonka bean, black vanilla and Russian leather. Black Gemstone is mineral, three cedars and Sicilian lemon over myrrh tar, incense and teak. Mortal Skin is a venomous sandalwood with blackberry, saffron, opoponax and iris.

Deserts and serpents

Soleil de Jeddah is golden dunes at midday: lemon, wild chamomile and osmanthus over iris, amber and Russian leather. Soleil de Jeddah Mango Kiss is its fruitier take, with mango, coconut and ylang ylang. Taklamakan, named after a Silk Road desert, joins bergamot and osmanthus to patchouli, vanilla and benzoin. Sand Dance centres on cocoa and whisky cream, Pink Boa on blackcurrant, raspberry and vodka, Sea my Love on mandarin, salt and leather.

Seven, three times

The number seven is the creator's personal symbol of perfection, luck and protection, hence La Collection 777. Its crystal-like flacons carry a vaulted cap of honeycombed metal. The house names the levels of its pyramids Fulgurance, Métamorphose and Quintessence, for top, heart and base. Our decants are filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle and labelled by us; they are not official brand samples, and the house is not involved.

Frequently asked

Which Stéphane Humbert Lucas sample should I try first?

God of Fire if you want mango and ginger over oud, Venom Incarnat for red berries, caramel and leather. Black Gemstone is the choice for incense, cedar and myrrh, and Soleil de Jeddah for lemon, iris and leather. Four samples, four very different temperatures.

What is the difference between Soleil de Jeddah and Mango Kiss?

Soleil de Jeddah pairs lemon, wild chamomile and osmanthus with iris, amber and Russian leather. Soleil de Jeddah Mango Kiss, a bolder, fruitier take in the brand's words, brings mango, orange blossom, ylang ylang and coconut. Both end on iris butter and Madagascar vanilla.

What do 777 and Serpent stand for?

They are the two collections. La Collection 777 was the first, drawn from the creator's travels in the Middle East and named after his lucky number. La Collection Serpent builds each perfume on a snake legend: God of Fire, Mortal Skin and Venom Incarnat belong to it.

Rudy Review of the FragranceGems shop
  • Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.
