Venom Incarnat is Stéphane Humbert Lucas's red elixir, staged as a love potion and which the house likens to the sugared venom of a passionate bite. Caramel and berries open it, cinnamon and Virginia cedar sit in the middle, and the ending is tonka with black vanilla, earthy patchouli and Russian leather. Sweet and dark perfumes are risky blind, so a vial is the cautious route.

Three berries and caramel
Three berries open together, blackberry, strawberry and wild strawberry, fruit both dark and bright, with caramel threaded through. Strawberry is the juicy part, blackberry the deeper and slightly tart one, and the caramel lends a warm, sugary edge right from the start.

Raspberry, cinnamon, cedar
Raspberry carries the fruit into the heart, where cinnamon contributes sweet spice and cedar from Virginia a dry, pencil-like wood. The cedar holds the sweetness back, so the middle stays structured instead of syrupy, which is the balance to watch on your skin.

Black vanilla and leather
The base is made of tonka bean and black vanilla with patchouli and Russian leather around them. The pair of tonka and vanilla gives a creamy, almond-like sweetness, patchouli supplies earth, and the leather a dry, slightly rough note so that the finish is not merely sweet.

About Stéphane Humbert Lucas
Stéphane Humbert Lucas is a painter and poet before he is a perfumer, a synesthete who says he sees his fragrances in colours. His Paris house makes, in its own words, no marketing concessions: the first collection, 777, launched in 2012 and draws on his travels in the Middle East, and the Serpent collection retells snake legends from Mexico to China. Perfumes built on colour and legend need to be worn to be understood, and a 10 ml decant gives you several evenings to do so.
