Act one, the approach
Blackberry, saffron and cardamom open the scent. The blackberry is dark and slightly tart, saffron adds leathery, metallic warmth, and cardamom a cool, aromatic spice. The result is held-back tension rather than a sweet burst, as befits a slow approach.

Act two, sandalwood and the stare
Sandalwood forms the middle, smooth, creamy and dry at once, thickened by opoponax, a sweet balsamic resin. Iris adds a cool, powdery, slightly rooty texture. The brand speaks of heat meeting icy cold, and the iris is where you can most easily find the cold.

Act three, the strike
Labdanum, musk and ambergris hold the base. Labdanum is dark, sticky and amber-like, musk soft and skin-like, and ambergris adds a salty, warm, slightly animalic depth. In the brand's telling the black venom spreads here, and the finish is smooth and enveloping, not sharp.

About Stéphane Humbert Lucas
Stéphane Humbert Lucas is a painter and poet before he is a perfumer, a synesthete who says he sees his fragrances in colours. His Paris house makes, in its own words, no marketing concessions: the first collection, 777, launched in 2012 and draws on his travels in the Middle East, and the Serpent collection retells snake legends from Mexico to China. Perfumes built on colour and legend need to be worn to be understood, and a 10 ml decant gives you several evenings to do so.
