How it unfolds

A fresh, slightly sharp start
Bergamot, green notes, blue ginger and pink pepper make a clear opening. The ginger and pepper bring a light, dry spice rather than heat, and the green notes keep the first minutes clean. On the decant, this is a brief stage, so do not decide on it.

Rose between fruit and spice
Turkish rose meets blackcurrant, with its tart dark-fruit side, and cardamom, a cool aromatic spice. The rose therefore sits between fruit and spice rather than standing alone, which makes the heart lively. Roses divide opinions, so this is the stage to judge on your own skin.

The long vanilla base
Patchouli and cedarwood bring earth and dryness, vanilla and benzoin a soft, resinous sweetness, ambergris and musk a smooth background, sandalwood a creamy depth. Vanilla runs through all of it. A decant gives you days to see if that sweetness stays calm for you.

How to test it
Wear the decant on a cool evening and give it time, because the vanilla grows more noticeable as the spice and green notes fade. Test it once at dinner and once at home, and pay attention to how the rose and the vanilla share the space. As an Extrait it is dense, so begin with a modest application.
Who it is for
People who like vanilla cut with spice, rose and wood, so that it never reads as plain sweetness. It suits dinners, quiet evenings and autumn or winter wardrobes, and suits anyone who prefers warm, calm scents to loud ones. If rose and vanilla together sound too soft to you, the sample will say so quickly.
Why try Nishane Ani as a sample first
Ani has seven base notes and a rose heart, which makes it hard to imagine from a list, and Extraits are a large commitment at 100 ml. The brand's idea, borders dissolving and an empire built from ruins, is a story, not a guide to your skin. A 10 ml decant lets you decide on the scent alone.

What is in the vial?
Ani Extrait de Parfum, filled by FragranceGems from the original 100 ml bottle into a 10 ml glass spray vial and labelled by us. Nishane does not supply it, and we are not affiliated with the house.
Which collection does Ani belong to?
Nishane's No Boundaries collection, according to the brand, which named it after the ancient city of Ani. It is a different story from the other collections of the house, but the scent matters more for the test.
Can I test it outside winter?
Yes. Autumn and winter suit it best because of the warm vanilla and resinous base, but a cool spring evening works as well, thanks to the fresh, ginger-led opening. The decant lets you try both.
How much time should I give it?
A full evening at least. The opening is fresh and sharp, the heart fruity and floral, and the vanilla and woods only settle in later. That slow turn is what the sample is for.
The brand
About Nishane
Nishane was founded in Istanbul in 2012 by Mert Güzel and Murat Katran, and the name means mark, sign or symbol. Almost everything the house makes is an Extrait de Parfum, and each perfume carries a story: a shadow-theatre character, a line by Rumi, an Anatolian folk song. Several of the favourites now also exist in a reworked X version. Stories and versions are easier to choose between on skin, which is what a few 10 ml decants are for.
