Roja Parfums Amber Aoud is a Parfum created by Roja Dove in 2012 and listed as unisex. It follows the Middle Eastern tradition of gum resins: lemon, bergamot and lime open it, rose, jasmine, ylang ylang and fig form the heart, and oud, saffron, cinnamon, benzoin and ambergris sit in the base. It is a dense, warm scent, and dense scents are best tried on skin first.

How it unfolds

A short citrus lift
Lemon, bergamot and lime open the scent with a clean, brief lift. They clear the way without defining it: within a few minutes the citrus gives way and the warmer, darker parts of the composition take over, like lifting a lid before the resin appears.

Rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, fig
The heart pairs Rose de Mai and Jasmin de Grasse for a rich floral, with ylang ylang adding a creamy, heavy sweetness. Fig contributes a green, milky fruit with a hint of wood. This is the soft, plush bridge between the bright start and the dark resin beneath.

Oud, saffron and resin
In the base oud brings a smoky, leathery depth, saffron a warm metallic spice and cinnamon a sweet heat. Benzoin adds sweet resin, sandalwood a creamy wood, and patchouli, oakmoss, orris and birch dry earth and a hint of smoke. Ambergris supplies the salty note, musk the softness.

How to test it
Test the sample on a cool evening, with one application on the chest or neck, since the Parfum is dense and stays close to the skin. Wear it a second time on a milder day to check whether the resin and oud still feel comfortable. Give it space instead of adding more.
Who it is for
A sample suits anyone who enjoys resinous, spiced woods and does not mind a scent with presence, and people who want oud in a sweet, rounded form, with benzoin, fig and rose softening the edges. The house lists it as unisex. If you prefer light, fresh scents, this is not the one.

Is Amber Aoud very sweet?
There is sweetness from benzoin and fig, but saffron, cinnamon, patchouli and ambergris add spice, earth and salt. The house describes the balance as sweet, spicy, salty and woody.

About Roja Parfums
Roja Parfums was founded in Mayfair, London, in 2011 by Roja Dove and calls itself a house of haute perfumery. The formulas are long: a single pyramid can run to twenty or thirty notes, from citrus and lavender through roses and jasmine to tobacco, resins and oud. Most perfumes exist as an Eau de Parfum and as a Parfum. Compositions this layered unfold slowly and differently on each skin, so a 10 ml decant worn over several days is the fair test.
