Ballet Russes tribute in tarragon and moss
Roja Parfums Diaghilev is a theatrical chypré, a tribute to Sergei Diaghilev, founder of the Ballet Russes, first made for a Ballet Russes exhibition at London's V&A. The house describes a chypré accord of 33 ingredients, with a very long recorded note list from lemon and tarragon to civet. A Parfum this complex is better tried in 10 ml before you take 100 ml.

Citrus and tarragon
Lemon, bergamot, lime and orange open it, with tarragon giving a green, faintly anise-like herbal tone. It is a bright overture rather than a sweet one. The first minutes show whether the combination of fresh citrus and herb feels elegant on you.

A large floral heart
Rose de Mai, Jasmin de Grasse, tuberose, ylang ylang, heliotrope and violet fill the heart, joined by blackcurrant buds and peach. The brand's tag line is bold and theatrical, and this is the part that delivers it: flowers in volume, with a fruit edge.

Moss, leather and resin
The base is very long, with oakmoss, patchouli, leather, labdanum, vetiver and woods, balsams and resins, vanilla, musk, ambergris and civet. It is what makes the chypré, dark, mossy and leathery. It needs a few wearings before you can say whether it suits you.

About Roja Parfums
Roja Parfums was founded in Mayfair, London, in 2011 by Roja Dove and calls itself a house of haute perfumery. The formulas are long: a single pyramid can run to twenty or thirty notes, from citrus and lavender through roses and jasmine to tobacco, resins and oud. Most perfumes exist as an Eau de Parfum and as a Parfum. Compositions this layered unfold slowly and differently on each skin, so a 10 ml decant worn over several days is the fair test.
