Dominique Ropion composed Velvet Iris for Essential Parfums as a woody, carnal reading of the iris, and it dates from 2025. Pink pepper, turmeric leaf and buchu leaf give the start; iris concrete sits between galbanum and lentisque; sandalwood, labdanum and Saffiano close it. Spice with leaves
The opening of pink pepper, turmeric leaf and buchu leaf is what the brand calls spicy freshness. Two of the three are leaves, so the spice carries a green, slightly herbal bite rather than the heat of ground pepper. It is lively and not hot.

Iris, galbanum, lentisque
The heart is iris concrete, which the brand says warms on the skin between galbanum and lentisque. Galbanum adds a sharp green edge, lentisque a resinous note, and the iris brings the soft, velvety petal texture promised by the name.

Wood, resin and suede
Sandalwood is creamy, labdanum is dark and amber-like, and Saffiano, described by the brand as a leather-suede molecule, adds a supple suede touch that echoes the velvet in the title. The finish is quiet and soft, with no sugar in it.

Essential Parfums was started in Paris in 2018 by Géraldine Archambault after thirty years in the industry, with one rule: a different perfumer for every eau de parfum, working freely and signing the bottle. The brand states 16 to 18% concentration and 82 to 93% ingredients of natural origin, alcohol from beetroot and no added colour. The results are clear and uncluttered, which is why a sample tells you quickly whether a bottle belongs on your shelf.
