Divine Vanille is Olivier Pescheux's tribute to sustainably produced Madagascan vanilla absolute, from Essential Parfums. Tonka bean and benzoin soften it, cinnamon bark and osmanthus add spice, and cedarwood, patchouli and musks frame it. Vanilla is easy to like in theory and harder in practice, which is why a 10 ml decant is the cautious way in.

The vanilla itself
The brand's own words for this vanilla are mysterious, deep and carnal. It is an absolute, a concentrated extract, so do not expect a pale, sugary dessert note. The first thing a test should tell you is whether that darker register is what you hoped for.

Balm and a leathery edge
Tonka bean and benzoin wrap the vanilla in balm and softness. Cinnamon bark and osmanthus add spicy and leathery facets, which stop it from being purely sweet. Check on your skin whether the cinnamon reads as warming or as too much.

Cedarwood, patchouli and musks make a creamy, woody frame, and the brand describes a luminous veil of silky musks over all of it. Wood and patchouli add weight and a darker, earthy line while the musks keep the surface soft. Give this stage time before you judge.

Essential Parfums was started in Paris in 2018 by Géraldine Archambault after thirty years in the industry, with one rule: a different perfumer for every eau de parfum, working freely and signing the bottle. The brand states 16 to 18% concentration and 82 to 93% ingredients of natural origin, alcohol from beetroot and no added colour. The results are clear and uncluttered, which is why a sample tells you quickly whether a bottle belongs on your shelf.
