A smoky Cretaceous fire in extrait form
Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex is set at the close of the Cretaceous, in a landscape of wildfire and lightning, with a blaze in the sky ending the age of the giants. Antonio Gardoni gave it a large, smoky shape in this Extrait de Parfum, with fir, pepper and nutmeg on top, six flowers in the heart and a base of resins, leather, cade and woods. A scent this big is better met in a decant first.

A hot, resinous start
The top holds six notes. Bergamot and neroli brighten it, black pepper and nutmeg warm it, and fir with laurel leaf adds a green, resinous side. It is more aromatic and spicy than fresh, as if the air were already dry and hot before the fire.

A dense floral heart
Rose, jasmine, geranium, ylang ylang, osmanthus and champaca keep the florals large and dense rather than delicate. The brand also mentions a cold, metallic rose oxide, which keeps the bouquet from turning soft. Check whether this crowd of flowers feels thrilling or crowded on you.

Smoke, leather and woods
The base is where the fire burns: cade gives smoky wood, frankincense and resins give smoke and balsam, leather, cedar, patchouli and sandalwood bring dry woods, with vanilla and civet to round things off. Civet and leather are flagged by the brand as synthetic.

Is it a leather perfume?
Nine notes make the base, and leather is only one of them, beside cade, resins and frankincense. With fir, pepper and nutmeg above and six flowers in the middle, it is a part of the picture. The sample shows how much of it you notice.
How should I approach a big smoky scent?
Start with a single light application on skin rather than clothes, and give it time to unfold. If it feels like too much, you have still learned something useful.

Zoologist names every perfume after an animal and gives each one to a different perfumer, whose name is printed on the box. Victor Wong founded the house in Toronto in 2013, and he is frank about the result: the brand calls its range creative, artistic and strong, not mass-appeal, and does not recommend buying a full bottle without trying a sample first. A 10 ml decant lets you find out whether Bee, Squid or Tyrannosaurus Rex is an animal you can live with.

Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again.
