Silky Woods is the first perfume in Goldfield & Banks' Botanical Series, a woody gourmand Eau de Parfum from 2021 made by Hamid Merati-Kashani around Australian agarwood. Cinnamon and tobacco leaf start it, ylang-ylang and vanilla follow, and agarwood with suede, saffron, incense and sandalwood closes. Sweet, dark and smoky together is a combination to try at small scale first.

Cinnamon and leaf
The top is Ceylon cinnamon and tobacco leaf, a pairing that is warm, dry and slightly sweet. There is no citrus to cool it down, so the first impression is cosy and spiced. Smell it again after a few minutes, when the sharpest edges of the cinnamon have softened.

Ylang-ylang and Tahitian vanilla
In the heart, ylang-ylang brings a creamy floral note and vanilla a smooth gourmand sweetness. This is the stage that justifies the word gourmand, though the neighbouring woods keep it from becoming a dessert. Pay attention to how sweet it feels on your own skin.

Agarwood, suede and incense
The base rests on agarwood from the Queensland rainforests, which the brand says was harvested sustainably for perfumery for the first time. Suede, saffron, incense and sandalwood soften and surround it. The result is dark but smooth, as the name Silky Woods promises.

Is it more sweet or more smoky?
Both are present. Vanilla and ylang-ylang supply sweetness, while agarwood, incense and tobacco leaf supply smoke and dryness. Which one dominates depends on your skin, so wear it more than once.

Dimitri Weber, the French-Belgian creative director, pairs each of them with a different perfumer, and every product page states how concentrated the result is, between 20 and 26%. Most noses have never met these ingredients, so a 10 ml decant on your own skin is the honest way to find out which landscape suits you.
