Goldfield & Banks Silky Woods Elixir is a darker Extrait de Parfum that goes back to the Australian agarwood of Silky Woods, set in the ancient Daintree Rainforest of Far North Queensland. Fig and saffron open it, orris and guaiac wood form the heart, and vanilla, Oud Assafi and agarwood close it. Dense extraits are best tried small first.

Fig and saffron
The top is ripe fig with saffron. Fig is soft and green-sweet, saffron dry and a little leathery, and together they set a dark, warm tone from the start. Pay attention to how far the fruit reaches before the woods take over.

Orris and guaiac wood
The heart pairs orris with smoky guaiac wood. Orris brings a cool, powdery smoothness and guaiac wood a dry, smoky depth. It is a quiet middle, a pause between the fruit and the darker base, and easy to miss on a quick test.

Vanilla, oud and agarwood
Vanilla, Oud Assafi and Australian agarwood sit in the base, and the brand says they fuse. Vanilla softens the dark woods and the agarwood adds resinous depth. The sample shows whether you find that mix rich or simply too serious for your taste.

How to test it
Choose a cool evening and apply a small amount to the chest or the back of the neck, since an extrait stays close and builds slowly. Smell it again as the fig fades and the woods come in. Try a second time in daylight, to check that you still like it when the room is bright.
Who it is for
Unisex, and for people who already like dark woods and want fig and saffron in front of the oud instead of a plain timber. The Extrait suits autumn and winter evenings. Anyone who prefers light, fresh or sugary perfumes should expect it to feel serious.

Is the decant sold by Goldfield & Banks?
No. We transfer the Extrait de Parfum from the original bottle into a glass spray vial and add our own label. The brand does not supply this decant and takes no part in it.
Does it smell smoky?
Somewhat. Guaiac wood is smoky and the oud and agarwood add resinous depth, but fig, saffron and vanilla keep it warm and rounded. A sample shows how that balance feels on you.
Is it a good first niche perfume?
It suits someone who already likes dark woods and deep resins. If you are new to niche perfume, the decant is a low-risk way to meet it before a larger bottle.

Dimitri Weber, the French-Belgian creative director, pairs each of them with a different perfumer, and every product page states how concentrated the result is, between 20 and 26%. Most noses have never met these ingredients, so a 10 ml decant on your own skin is the honest way to find out which landscape suits you.
