Strawberry first
The opening combines upcycled natural strawberry, bergamot and pink pepper. The brand takes the strawberry from an upcycling process. Notice whether the fruit comes across as ripe and sweet or is held back by the citrus and the pepper.

Rose absolutes and pistachio
Rose absolutes lead the heart, with a pistachio accord beside them. The brand describes the rose through essential oil, a pure absolute and two abstract notes, so it is meant to have several faces. Pistachio gives it a different texture, quieter than the strawberry.

A base of ambery wood
Cedarwood, Akigalawood™, Ambrofix™ and tonka bean make up the base, which the brand calls a deep canvas of ambery woods. It is where the rose and the fruit finally settle. Wear the decant long enough on a day out to meet this part.

Choose an evening or a dressed-up day in spring or autumn, apply to neck and wrists, and note the order in which you meet strawberry, rose and wood. Compare a second wearing on a different day. A perfume with this much sweetness reads differently in warm and cool air.
Who it is for
People who like rose with a modern turn: fruit and nuts, then woods, in place of a classic bouquet. Ex Nihilo presents it without a gender. It suits someone who enjoys a little sweetness and wants wood beneath it. A dry, green or purely fresh floral is not what it offers.

Where does the decant come from?
Not from the house. FragranceGems pours the 10 ml from the original bottle into a glass spray vial and puts our own label on it, and Ex Nihilo is not involved.
What is upcycled strawberry?
According to the brand it is a natural strawberry extract from an upcycling process. Within the perfume it gives the rose a ripe, sweet turn, and the sample lets you judge it.
Is the rose sweet or dry?
The brand speaks of an addictive sweet turn, while bergamot, pink pepper and cedarwood add some dryness. How that balance feels is personal, so test it on skin.

About Ex Nihilo
Ex Nihilo was founded in Paris in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier, three people from the luxury world who hand emerging perfumers carte blanche and, the brand says, the finest raw materials without cost constraints. The perfumes sit in four universes, floral, ambery, woody and citrus, and lean on modern materials such as Ambrofix and Akigalawood. Their airy, abstract style is easy to misjudge on paper; a 10 ml decant on skin is the fairer test.

Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again.
