The beginning is soft fruit and clean citrus: pear gives roundness and bergamot adds a bright edge. It is a short stage, and its job is only to set a light, clear tone, like the first facet of a gem catching the light, before the heart turns warmer.

Ex Nihilo was founded in Paris in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier, three people from the luxury world who hand emerging perfumers carte blanche and, the brand says, the finest raw materials without cost constraints. The perfumes sit in four universes, floral, ambery, woody and citrus, and lean on modern materials such as Ambrofix and Akigalawood. Their airy, abstract style is easy to misjudge on paper; a 10 ml decant on skin is the fairer test.
