Six fruits and a pinch of pepper
The opening holds pineapple, black currant, pink pepper, apple, grapefruit and bergamot. That is a juicy, bright and slightly tart cluster, with the pink pepper adding a dry sparkle. Spray once and notice which fruit speaks first, and how quickly the sweetness gives way to the spices.

Cardamom, ginger, carnation and lily
The heart combines cardamom, ginger, carnation and lily of the valley. Cardamom and ginger are warm and spicy, carnation adds a clove-like floral note, and lily of the valley gives a clean, green lift. This is the stage where the fruit fades into a drier, more aromatic profile.

Leather, ambergris, cedar and musk
The base lists leather, ambergris, cedarwood, musk, cashmere musk and moss. Leather and cedar give a dry, masculine structure, ambergris and the two musks add a smooth salty softness, and moss anchors it. Come back to your wrist in the evening to judge this long finish.

How to test it
FragranceGems tags Vanguard for daily use, evenings and work in spring and summer. Test it on an ordinary weekday with one or two sprays, and again on an evening out. Because the pyramid is long, smell it at several moments, from the fruity start to the leathery, mossy end of the day.
Who it is for
Written for men, as it is listed, who like fruity, citrusy perfumes that finish with leather and moss, and want something for the warmer part of the year. Moderate is its intensity tag. If pineapple openings are not your favourite, the decant lets you find out whether the leather base wins you over.
Why try Maison Asrar Vanguard as a sample first
Long note lists with fruit at one end and leather at the other can be balanced or disjointed, and only wearing shows which. What am I buying when I choose the Vanguard sample?
A decant of the perfume that FragranceGems has filled from the original bottle into a 10 ml glass spray vial and labelled itself. It is not an official brand sample, and Maison Asrar had no part in it.
Which notes are in Vanguard?
The record lists six top notes, four heart notes and six base notes, from pineapple and bergamot to leather, ambergris and moss. We name only these. Anything else you smell is your own impression.
Is it a good summer perfume?
FragranceGems tags it for spring and summer, which suits the fruit and citrus opening. The leather and moss base may feel different in heat, and the sample is a simple way to see how.
