Perfume samples for women: a first set of five
A first set of five perfume samples tagged for women: an airy rose, a powdery iris, a fruity floral, a floral with cocoa and a spiced salted caramel.
Perfume samples for women are a large shelf, and the tag says little about how a perfume wears. This guide offers a first set of five chosen for spread: each sample is tagged for women in our records, has a full note list, comes from a different house, and fills a different slot. It is not a ranking, and we do not claim these five are the final word. They are a sensible start for someone who wants to learn which direction is hers.
How the five were chosen
We started from the samples tagged for women and removed any without a full note list. Then we asked for five slots: an airy rose for spring, a powdery iris for daily wear, a fruity floral for warm days, a floral with a cocoa edge for cooler ones, and a spiced salted caramel for the evening. For each slot we picked one sample from a house not already in the set, mixing niche and designer ranges. We did not use how often a sample is ordered as a filter.
The five
Diptyque Eau Rose is the airy rose. It is an Eau de Toilette tagged light, for spring and summer, daily wear and work, and the list reads damascena rose, centifolia rose, litchi accord and ambroxan. Litchi and ambroxan keep the rose bright.

Frédéric Malle Iris Poudre is the powdery iris. The top is rose, violet and ylang-ylang, the heart iris, and the base sandalwood, musk and tonka bean. It is tagged moderate for spring and autumn, daily wear and special occasions.

Argos Birth of Venus is the fruity floral. The top reads bergamot, peach, orange blossom, grapefruit and lavender, the heart narcissus, jasmine sambac, rose, iris, violet, raspberry and chocolate, and the base amber, vetiver, cedarwood, Mysore sandalwood, cashmere wood and labdanum. Moderate in strength, it is meant for spring and summer.

Velixir Aphrodite is the floral with cocoa. The top is bergamot, lychee and ginger, the heart peony, rose and cocoa, and the base patchouli. It is tagged moderate for autumn and winter, daily wear, evenings and special occasions.

Penhaligon's Changing Constance is the spiced salted caramel. The top is cardamom and pimento, the heart salted caramel accord, and the base tobacco accord. It is tagged moderate for evenings in autumn and winter.

What the five show
Together the five cover the whole year: Eau Rose and Birth of Venus for spring and summer, Iris Poudre for spring and autumn, and Aphrodite and Changing Constance for autumn and winter. Four are tagged moderate and one light, so none is loud. Rose appears in Eau Rose, Iris Poudre and Birth of Venus and Aphrodite, and iris links Iris Poudre and Birth of Venus. Bergamot opens Birth of Venus and Aphrodite. If you find yourself reaching for the rose ones, follow rose and read rose samples; if the iris appeals, iris samples goes further.
How to wear the set
Wear one a day on clean skin and write one line each evening. Match the order to the weather: Eau Rose and Birth of Venus in warm weeks, Iris Poudre in mild ones, Aphrodite and Changing Constance when it cools. By the fifth day you will know whether you lean to rose, powder, fruit or sweetness. The routine is in how to test perfume on skin, and how to build your own sample set explains how to go on.
Should one of the five win you over, keep wearing it for a week and look at which sample size to choose for a larger vial. Should none do so, that also tells you something: you now know which slot you turned down. A set of five also makes a considerate present for someone who likes perfume; perfume samples as a gift explains how to put one together.
The wider shelf is in perfume samples for women and unisex perfume samples. We fill and label each vial ourselves from the original bottle, and the houses are not involved, as described in how we fill your sample and the FAQ, while sample sets shows how to combine vials.
FAQ
How were these five chosen?
Each is tagged for women in our records, has a full note list, comes from a different house and fills a different slot: airy rose, powdery iris, fruity floral, floral with cocoa and spiced caramel. The point is range, with no order of merit.
Can I wear perfumes that are tagged for men too?
Yes. The tag reflects how the house presents a perfume. Many of our samples are unisex, and the unisex shelf is a good second set after these five.
Are floral perfumes the only choice for women?
No. The set includes a rose, an iris and two florals, but also a salted caramel with spice and a cocoa heart. The point of a first set is to find out which direction suits you, floral or not.
