Iris perfume samples: what to try
Iris can be powdery, cool, green, fruity or dark. Eight iris samples that show each side, with the recorded notes and the intensity tag.
Iris perfume samples are an education in how cool a perfume can feel. Iris, or orris, comes from the root of the iris plant, which is dried and aged before it is used. On a note list it reads as powdery, a little earthy and slightly buttery, closer to cosmetic powder and suede than to a flower. It appears in more than seventy of our samples, usually in the heart. This guide groups eight by character, so you can tell which iris you like before choosing a bottle.
Soft and skin-like
Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana is tagged light and unisex. The recorded list is violet leaves on top, iris and rose in the heart, and sandalwood, musks and cedarwood below. Violet leaves and rose keep it airy and clean.

Frédéric Malle Iris Poudre is the powdery one. It opens with rose, violet and ylang-ylang, has iris alone in the heart, and finishes on sandalwood, musk and tonka bean. Our records file it for women and for spring and autumn.

Diptyque Fleur de Peau has the shortest list: musk, iris, ambrette and pink peppercorn. Musk and ambrette give the iris a close, skin-like finish. It is tagged moderate.

Cool, green and herbal
Les Eaux Primordiales Iris Palladium opens with cardamom, lavender and cilantro and moves to mugwort, violet and iris. The base is sandalwood, vanilla, guaiac wood, amber, benzoin and cedar wood. Mugwort and cilantro make a cold, herbal iris, unlike the soft ones above.

Essential Parfums Velvet Iris places iris among green notes and leather. The top is pink pepper, turmeric leaf and buchu leaf, the heart galbanum, lentisque and iris concrete, and the base sandalwood, labdanum and saffiano. Galbanum and saffiano leather give it an austere, tailored feel.

Pernoire Vitias is the marine iris, tagged strong for spring and summer: bergamot, lime, pink pepper and black pepper open it, angelica root, iris, blond woods, guaiacum and marine notes form the heart, and ambergris and white musk close. Angelica root and blond woods keep the iris cold and dry.

Bright and fruity
Reinvented Aether Aura pairs iris with fruit. The top is bergamot, lemon, ginger and pink pepper, the heart iris, kiwi, pineapple and geranium, and the base amber, vetiver and musk. Kiwi and pineapple next to iris are an unusual duo, and our records tag it for spring and summer.

Dark and leathery
Mind Games Gardez takes iris toward the evening. The top reads apricot and blackberry leaf, the heart orris, jasmine sambac, rosewood and cassis, and the base black leather, cedarwood and popcorn. Black leather and cedar make it the darkest of the eight, and it carries the strong tag.

What the eight share
Sandalwood is iris's most frequent companion here, in Iris Porcelana, Iris Poudre, Iris Palladium and Velvet Iris, and musk comes next, in Porcelana, Fleur de Peau, Vitias and Aether Aura. Violet turns up in Porcelana, Poudre and Palladium, which makes sense, as the two notes share a powdery cool character. Rose links Porcelana and Poudre. So the soft iris is usually iris with sandalwood and musk, and the cooler ones swap those for herbs, galbanum or sea notes. Following sandalwood or musk from here shows you where the soft side of the note leads.
How to choose
Iris is a note you either find calming or find dusty. Take one from the soft group and one from the cool group, wear them on different days, and write down a word for each. If both feel pleasant, add the fruity or dark ones. Wear iris on clean skin and give it time, as the powder often takes a while to appear. The routine is in how to test perfume on skin, and if the soft ones please you, musk samples and rose samples are natural next steps.
Every iris sample is gathered under iris, and the floral family holds many more. Two of the houses are Diptyque and Ex Nihilo. We fill and label each vial ourselves from the original bottle, and the houses are not involved, and the steps are in how we fill your sample, the FAQ and sample sets.
FAQ
Why is iris listed as orris or orris root?
Orris is the iris rhizome, the root that is dried and aged before use. A note list may say iris, orris, orris root or orris butter. They point to the same family of cool, powdery, slightly earthy notes.
Is iris a feminine note?
Our records file the samples in this guide under unisex, with one for women. The note is cool and powdery rather than sweet, and it is worn by anyone. Judge by what you smell on your own skin.
Which iris sample is the softest start?
Ex Nihilo Iris Porcelana is tagged light and Diptyque Fleur de Peau has the shortest list of the eight. Either gives you the soft, skin-like side of the note before you try the herbal or dark ones.
