Tonka perfume samples: what to try

Tonka bean shows up in fresh, spiced and sweet perfumes alike. Eight samples that show its range, grouped by what surrounds it.

Rasasi Hawas Tropical sample

Tonka perfume samples show how much one ingredient can change with its company. Tonka bean is the seed of a tropical tree, and in perfumery it brings a warm, soft, slightly dry sweetness, closer to hay and almond than to sugar. It is a base note, which means it appears late and lingers, and it is one of the most common supporting notes on our shelf. More than a hundred of our samples list it, usually in the base, and the perfumes around it differ a great deal. This guide groups eight by company, so that you can tell which kind of tonka you like.

Tonka with freshness

Not every tonka perfume is a winter perfume. Rasasi Hawas Tropical pairs it with coconut and fig: the top is fig leaf, coconut water and ginger, the heart coconut, fig and mint, and the base tonka bean, musk and sandalwood. It is tagged for spring and summer, which is unusual for the note.

Mykonos Empire sits in the base of a citrus and aquatic Eau de Parfum. The top reads lime, bergamot, mandarin orange and tropical fruits, the heart Sicilian orange, ginger, jasmine and coconut water, and the base patchouli, white musk and tonka bean. Our records cover all four seasons for it.

Byredo Bal d'Afrique places tonka bean absolue beneath flowers and fruit. Its top is south African buchu, African marigold, bergamot and blackcurrant, the heart cyclamen, jasmine petals and violet, and the base tonka bean absolue, cedarwood, musks and vetiver. This is tonka as a soft floor under a bright, floral structure.

Tonka with spice and wood

Khadlaj Onyx Silver opens with black pepper, bergamot and ginger, moves to cardamom and petitgrain oil, and settles on benzoin, labdanum, patchouli and tonka bean. Tonka here joins resins and patchouli, a drier use than the sweet one.

French Avenue Cosmic Tonka carries the note in its name: bergamot and saffron first, then agarwood (oud) and Bulgarian rose, and white musk, tonka bean, amber and oakmoss to finish. It is the clearest sample of tonka as part of an oriental wood structure, and it is tagged moderate.

Tonka as dessert

Arabiyat Prestige Uhud uses tonka in the heart, beside honey and raspberry. The top is caramel, red fruit and rose, the heart honey, raspberry and tonka bean, and the base vanilla, white musk and amber. It is the sweet end of the list and is tagged strong.

Xerjoff XJ 1861 Naxos mixes honey, cinnamon and tobacco leaf: lemon, bergamot, lavender and incense from oman on top, jasmine sambac, honey, cinnamon and cashmere in the heart, and vanilla, tobacco leaf and tonka bean below. The tonka is part of a gourmand structure that also holds incense and lavender.

Tonka on its own

Jo Malone London Myrrh & Tonka is a Cologne Intense with three recorded notes only: lavender, omumbiri myrrh and tonka bean. It is the simplest way to meet the note without a crowd around it.

What the eight share

Seen together, the lists show how tonka is usually staged. Musk stands beside it in five of the eight: Tropical, Empire, Bal d'Afrique, Cosmic Tonka and Uhud. Bergamot opens Empire, Bal d'Afrique, Onyx Silver, Cosmic Tonka and Naxos, which tells you that a bright top over a soft base is the standard plan. Vanilla joins tonka in Uhud and Naxos, patchouli joins it in Empire and Onyx Silver, and amber in Cosmic Tonka and Uhud. If one of these pairings appeals, follow it: musk leads to the clean end, patchouli to the earthy end.

How to choose

If you already like vanilla, begin with Uhud or Naxos, and if you prefer drier perfumes, with Onyx Silver or Cosmic Tonka. If you want a note you hardly notice but would miss, try Tropical or Empire. Wear each for a day and ask yourself one question: did the tonka feel like a warm floor or like the main event? Lay out two vials in the manner described in how to compare two perfumes with samples, and use the routine in how to test perfume on skin. If vanilla is your next question, vanilla samples and amber samples cover the neighbours of tonka.

Every tonka sample is collected under tonka, and the gourmand family holds many of the sweet ones. Houses here include Byredo and Xerjoff. Every vial is decanted and labelled by FragranceGems, with no involvement from the houses, as described in how we fill your sample, the FAQ and sample sets.

FAQ

What does tonka bean add to a perfume?

It adds warmth and softness to the base, a little like vanilla with a dry, almond-and-hay edge. Because it is rounder than most woods and less sweet than sugar notes, it often sits between a perfume's bright top and its musky finish.

Is tonka the same as vanilla?

No, though they are often paired. Vanilla is creamier and sweeter, tonka is drier and a little nutty. Many perfumes in this guide list both, and wearing one that has only tonka shows the difference clearly.

Which tonka sample is the lightest to start with?

Hawas Tropical and Mykonos Empire are both tagged moderate and for warm weather, with light company around the tonka. Start with one of them if you want tonka without a dessert effect.
