Which Frederic Malle sample to try first
Frederic Malle prints the perfumer’s name on the bottle like an author on a book. Eight samples in order of Fragrantica popularity, and a map of the roses and musks.
Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle opened in Paris in 2000 with nine perfumes and one idea: the perfumer is the author, so the name goes on the bottle like on a book. Frédéric Malle trained in art history, photography and advertising before developing his sense of smell at Roure, now Givaudan. Dominique Ropion, Maurice Roucel, Olivia Giacobetti, Jean-Claude Ellena and others work for the house with complete creative freedom, as much time as they need and the finest raw materials. The bottles are minimalist, with packaging that takes its graphic codes from Gallimard book covers. The results are often extreme in one direction, which is why a Frederic Malle sample beats a quick sniff.
Frederic Malle: eight samples, ordered by popularity
We ordered the samples on our list by the position each perfume holds on the Fragrantica popularity list of the house, as captured by NicheGems on 7 October 2026. Popularity shows how much a perfume is discussed, not how good it is. Notes are given as the house records them.
Portrait of a Lady (Eau de Parfum, 2010, Dominique Ropion) is the rose: a rose heart with blackcurrant, raspberry and clove, over patchouli, sandalwood and frankincense.

Musc Ravageur (2000, Maurice Roucel) opens on bergamot, mandarin and lavender and falls into amber, vanilla and musk, with sandalwood below.

Carnal Flower (2005, Dominique Ropion) is a study of tuberose in very high concentration, with melon, vegetal notes and a fresh tuberose over a milky tuberose and musk.

En Passant (2000, Olivia Giacobetti) is a portrait of lilac with cucumber, white musk and cedar, kept quiet on purpose.

L’Eau d’Hiver (Eau de Toilette, 2003, Jean-Claude Ellena) is the minimalist: bergamot over iris, hawthorn and heliotrope, a cologne that also warms the skin.

Promise (2017, Dominique Ropion) belongs to the Desert Gems collection, a tribute to Middle Eastern perfumery written by Western perfumers: pink pepper, rosemary and apple, Bulgarian and Turkish rose with clove, over patchouli, ambroxan, labdanum and cypriol.

French Lover (2007, Pierre Bourdon) is spicy and aromatic: pimiento, angelica and juniper over patchouli, vetiver and frankincense.

Iris Poudre (2000, Pierre Bourdon) is a powdery iris, with rose, violet and ylang ylang above sandalwood, musk and tonka bean. The Moon and Lipstick Rose complete the ten.

The Frederic Malle note map
Rose runs through Portrait of a Lady, Promise, The Moon, Iris Poudre and Lipstick Rose, each in a different setting. Musk closes Musc Ravageur, Carnal Flower, En Passant, Iris Poudre and Lipstick Rose, and iris links L’Eau d’Hiver, Iris Poudre and Lipstick Rose. Patchouli sits under Portrait of a Lady, French Lover and Promise, and incense under Portrait of a Lady, French Lover and The Moon. The rose samples guide places the house among others.
A first order of Portrait of a Lady, Musc Ravageur and Carnal Flower covers rose, amber-musk and tuberose, three of the strongest voices of the house. Because these perfumes are generous, try one per day and read how to test perfume on skin first. The musk samples guide explains why skin changes musks so much.
From Frederic Malle sample to bottle
If one stays with you after several wearings, the bottle is the next step. Our vial is filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle and labelled by us; Frederic Malle is not involved and it is not a brand sample. The first perfume in full size is at Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady. The sample set page shows how to combine vials, and the FAQ covers filling and labels.
FAQ
Which Frederic Malle sample should I try first?
Portrait of a Lady. It leads the Fragrantica popularity list for the house on our records, and its rose over blackcurrant, raspberry and clove, with patchouli, sandalwood and frankincense below, shows the house at its most generous.
Why does the perfumer’s name matter at Frederic Malle?
The house says it was the first to bring perfumers out of the shadows and treats them as authors. Each perfume carries the name of its perfumer, so you can follow a nose you like from one sample to the next.
Are Frederic Malle perfumes for women or for men?
The product pages carry no gender label, and some perfumes sit in both the women’s and the men’s pages. Our records note a suggested audience for each, but the sample on your skin is the better guide.
