Matière Première is the house of one perfumer, Aurélien Guichard, and of one rule: each perfume is built around an overdose of a single natural raw material, named on its page. Finnish birch tar, Greek saffron, Omani incense, a rose he grows himself in Grasse. The project began with the first fields he planted in 2016. A material in overdose is either exactly your thing or not at all, so test it as a 10 ml decant before you commit.

About Matière Première
Four materials, four samples
Falcon Leather is birch tar oil from Finland, warmed with saffron, cistus labdanum and benzoin: a falconer's glove in the sun, in the perfumer's image. Vanilla Powder turns Madagascar vanilla absolute pale with palo santo, coconut powder and white musks. Encens Suave is Oman incense oil deepened by labdanum and benzoin, with coffee and vanilla for warmth. Parisian Musc rests on ambrette seed, with Virginia cedar, ambroxan and a fig leaf note.
Rose, saffron, sandalwood, orange blossom
Radical Rose uses rose centifolia absolute from the house's own organic roses, sharpened by saffron and Jamaican pepper berries over patchouli and labdanum. Crystal Saffron is one thing only, a Greek saffron oil the perfumer found almost crystalline. Santal Austral leads with organic Australian sandalwood oil, softened by Tuscan iris, benzoin and tonka bean. Neroli Oranger sets Tunisian orange blossom absolute beside bergamot and ylang-ylang.
A perfumer who farms
The brand says Guichard is the only perfumer in the world who grows his own raw materials, on Ecocert-certified land in Grasse, with each harvest going into a single perfume. All perfumes contain 85% to 92% naturally derived ingredients and are described as gender neutral and vegan. Our decants are filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle and labelled by us; they are not official brand samples, and the house is not involved.

Which Matière Première sample should I try first?
Pick by material. Falcon Leather if you like smoky leather, Vanilla Powder for a dry, powdery vanilla, Encens Suave for incense with a gourmand edge. Parisian Musc is the quietest of the range and Radical Rose the one to choose for a dark, spicy rose.
Are Matière Première perfumes unisex?
Yes. The brand describes all its fragrances as gender neutral, and every perfume we decant is listed as unisex. Radical Rose, for instance, is presented as a genderless rose, and nothing in the notes of Falcon Leather or Santal Austral points to one side.
What does 'overdose' mean at Matière Première?
It is the brand's word for its method: one natural raw material is used in a very high dose and a few others support it. In Crystal Saffron the brand names only the Greek saffron oil; in Santal Austral the sandalwood is flanked by iris, benzoin and tonka bean.

Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again. Only thing I hope is that you guys would negotiate better price for GLS shipping to Finland. But I know that is not always possible. And I noticed the prices were lower than the competitors so the steep shipping price was not that big of a deal. Good job all in all.
