Sandalwood up front
Organic sandalwood oil from Australia takes the lead, and the brand's words for it are bold, creamy and luminous. The oil itself is mellow and woody, closer to milk than to dry timber, with a smooth hint of sweetness. It is the star here rather than a background note, so you will notice it at once.

Almond-milk iris
Tuscan iris absolute is called almond-milk by the brand, which says it draws out the sandalwood's velvet. Iris absolute is cool and powdery with a buttery hint, and next to the wood it softens the grain into something smooth and matte instead of pencil-dry.

Put the decant on the chest or the inner elbows, where warmth lets the sandalwood spread, and add little at first. Wear it on a working day, then in the evening, and notice how the creaminess develops. Autumn and winter are its natural seasons, though the smoothness may also suit spring.

About Matière Première
Matière Première is the house of one perfumer, Aurélien Guichard, and of one rule: each perfume is built around an overdose of a single natural raw material, named on its page. Finnish birch tar, Greek saffron, Omani incense, a rose he grows himself in Grasse. The project began with the first fields he planted in 2016. A material in overdose is either exactly your thing or not at all, so test it as a 10 ml decant before you commit.
