Dry pepper, green rhubarb
On skin the first minutes are crisp rather than sweet. Black pepper adds a dry tingle, rhubarb leaves a green and faintly sour edge, coriander a bright, citrusy spice. It is worth noticing how long this cool frame holds before the flowers take over.

Five flowers in the heart
Jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, lily of the valley and carnation arrive together. Tuberose and gardenia give the creamy, heady weight, lily of the valley a watery flash, carnation a trace of clove. Whether that crowd feels lush or simply too much is personal, and a decant lets you find out.

Resin, vetiver and leather
The base is where the white flowers meet something darker. Vetiver is dry and rooty, frankincense and opoponax smoky and balsamic, amber warm, and leather runs underneath all of it. The ending stays dry and grown-up, and you only meet it once the flowers have settled.

Wear it on bare skin on a spring or autumn evening, when a rich floral is least likely to overwhelm. Give it a whole day first, then a second try with a lighter touch, because tuberose and gardenia grow heavier in warm rooms. Note how the pepper opening and the leather ending feel to you.

Amouage has composed perfume in the Sultanate of Oman since 1983, with frankincense, myrrh and resins never far from the formula. Its Eau de Parfums are dosed between 20 and 30% perfume oil and aged for several weeks, so even the fresher ones carry weight on skin and change a lot over a day. That makes the house a textbook case for sampling: a 10 ml decant gives you time to live with the drydown before you choose a bottle.
