Interlude Black Iris Man is Amouage's reworking of Interlude Man. The house compares it to painting over an older canvas with a finer palette, adding orris to amber, resins and vanilla above leather, agarwood smoke and woods. Green and herbal first
Bergamot, rosemary and violet leaves start the scent on a cool, green, slightly bitter note. Violet leaf is crisp rather than sweet, so the first minutes feel tidy and herbal. Dark material is in the formula, but it waits behind this clear opening.

Orris in a resin cloud
In the heart orris sets a powdery, earthy and cool tone, and amber, frankincense, cistus, myrrh and vanilla gather around it. The resins give warmth and the vanilla stays smooth and low in volume. Orris is the note the brand adds to the earlier Interlude pyramid.

Leather, smoke, wood
Leather and agarwood smoke carry the base, with patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood alongside. The drydown is dark and dry, yet the woods give it shape. Amouage describes a vibrant force buried under calm, and this is the stage where it comes up.

Wear the sample on an evening, since that is the setting the brand has in mind, and again on a cool day. Use clean skin and a light hand: with a dense Eau de Parfum a little goes far. Give the drydown time on your own skin before you judge the smoke.

What does the orris change?
Orris is the note added in this version of Interlude. It brings a chalky, powdery coolness between the resins and the violet leaves, which is the part worth judging on your skin.
Does it work in warmer weather?
The green, cool opening helps in mild weather, but leather, smoke and resin form the core. A sample lets you try it on a spring evening and on a cold day, then see which setting suits you.

About Amouage
Amouage has composed perfume in the Sultanate of Oman since 1983, with frankincense, myrrh and resins never far from the formula. Its Eau de Parfums are dosed between 20 and 30% perfume oil and aged for several weeks, so even the fresher ones carry weight on skin and change a lot over a day. That makes the house a textbook case for sampling: a 10 ml decant gives you time to live with the drydown before you choose a bottle.
