Pear and smoke
It begins gently with juicy pear, the balsamic smoke of frankincense and a toasted hazelnut. Nothing sharp or citrusy is listed, so the first minutes feel soft, with the resin already casting a little shadow over the fruit.

Saffron in the heart
Saffron, rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus make up the heart. The saffron adds a leathery warmth, the flowers are full rather than airy, and osmanthus brings a suede-like apricot touch. This is where you find out whether rich florals suit you.

Cistus, woods and vanilla
Cistus, sandalwood, akigalawood, ambergris and vanilla form the base. Expect a dry, honeyed resin, a creamy wood and a salty, skin-like glow, closing on soft vanilla. The base arrives slowly, so judge the perfume only once it has settled.

How to test it
Spray it on bare skin in the evening, ideally in cooler weather, since resin and vanilla open up most fully then. Try it on two or three separate days: once at dinner, once for a quiet day indoors. Notice how the saffron and rose sit after the first quarter of an hour, and whether the vanilla ending still feels comfortable.

Guidance is filed under Amouage's universal perfumes, so it is aimed at no particular gender. A sample suits anyone drawn to rose with some depth who is unsure about saffron or resin, or who wants a warm evening floral without sugar. If you already love rich, ambery florals, it is a short step to try.

Which family does Guidance belong to?
In Amouage's own filing it sits with the florals and the ambers. Saffron, rose and jasmine run through the middle, with sandalwood, ambergris and vanilla underneath.
Is it only for cold evenings?
The resin and vanilla suit cooler weather best. If you usually wear light scents in summer, test it on a cooler day to judge it fairly.

About Amouage
Amouage has composed perfume in the Sultanate of Oman since 1983, with frankincense, myrrh and resins never far from the formula. Its Eau de Parfums are dosed between 20 and 30% perfume oil and aged for several weeks, so even the fresher ones carry weight on skin and change a lot over a day. That makes the house a textbook case for sampling: a 10 ml decant gives you time to live with the drydown before you choose a bottle.
