The top list is long: bergamot, lemon, orange blossom, tuberose, rose petals, raspberry and blackcurrant. Expect citrus brightness, tart berries and white flowers arriving together, a busy start that needs a few minutes to sort itself out.

Spiced florals
Violet, clove, cinnamon, geranium, gardenia, iris and ylang-ylang fill the heart. Clove and cinnamon bring warmth, gardenia and ylang-ylang a creamy richness, iris a cool powdery note. Here you learn whether you enjoy flowers with spice running through them.

Amber and sandalwood
The base holds amber, white musk, Mysore sandalwood, cashmere wood, patchouli and vanilla. It is smooth, warm and slightly sweet, with a little earth from the patchouli. A drydown like this is often what decides whether you reach for a perfume again.

Argos describes it as unisex with a feminine lean. A sample suits you if you like rich florals with spice and sweetness more than one clear flower. If you prefer dry, woody or green scents, the sweetness and clove here may be more than you want, and a small vial tells you that quickly.

Is the sample very sweet?
Moderately. The berries and vanilla add sweetness, yet clove, cinnamon, citrus and patchouli stop it turning sugary, so it comes across as rich rather than candied.
What is the scene behind the name?
From a painting by Rubens in which Venus disarms Mars. Argos treats that scene as a picture of love prevailing over conflict.
Is the decant the same Eau de Parfum as the full bottle?
Yes. FragranceGems fills a glass spray vial from the original 100 ml bottle and labels it. Argos has no part in the decanting.

About Argos
Argos is a Texan house, founded in Dallas in 2014 by the self-trained perfumer Christian Petrovich, and every one of its perfumes retells a Greek or Roman myth. The style is rich and layered: rum and tobacco, roses and raspberry, citrus over cashmere wood and Mysore sandalwood, blended and macerated in the brand's own laboratory in France. Because each perfume is built as a story with a long base, a 10 ml decant tells you more than any spray on paper.
