A memory, not a recipe
The idea behind Tam Dao is a recollection: the velvety, milky smell of sandalwood burned in holy forests in Vietnam, which founder Yves Coueslant never forgot. In the bottle that memory becomes sandalwood, and everything else is there to give it space.

Cedar, cypress, myrtle
Around the sandalwood stand cedar, cypress and myrtle. Cedar is dry and upright, cypress cool and green, myrtle herbal and leafy. They stop the sandalwood from becoming one soft block and push the scent toward wood and foliage instead of sweetness.

Soft and close
None of the four notes is loud, so the perfume stays near the skin, soft in texture with a dry edge. The milky character the brand mentions is still in view. Being an Eau de Toilette, it feels lighter than an Eau de Parfum of the same idea would.

Diptyque began in Paris in 1961 as a boutique run by three friends at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain, and perfume followed later. Its eaux de toilette and eaux de parfum are portraits of places and plants: a fig grove in Greece, sandalwood burned in Vietnamese temples, a river under a willow. Most are built on a short list of notes and wear lightly, so a 10 ml decant is the honest way to find out which portrait suits your skin before you buy a bottle.
