Kama is a Pernoire Extrait de Parfum from 2024 by Andreas Wilhelm, named after the Sanskrit word for desire and the Hindu god of love, Kamadeva. It pairs sweet blackberries and cotton candy with birch tar and leather, softened by violet and orris over moss, cashmere wool and musk. Contrasts like that are easy to dislike, so a 10 ml decant is the cautious route.

Berries and tar from the first moment
Blackberries and birch tar share the top, so sweetness and smoke arrive together. Violet and orris sit beside them as soft, cool flowers. This is a deliberately opposed start, and it is the point where you will know whether the pairing interests you.

Cotton candy and leather
The heart sets cotton candy beside leather, with cypriol and dry amber. The sugar is playful and light, and the leather and cypriol dark and dry. Dry amber adds warmth between them. Expect something that moves between childish and adult as you smell it.

Moss, cashmere wool and musk
The base is moss, cashmere wool and musk, which smooths the contrasts and leaves a soft, close finish. The argument between sweet and smoky ends here in something cosy. The brand places Kama in its Anima line, made at 25% extrait concentration.

How to test it
Apply once on an evening in cool weather and observe it separately at the start, an hour or so into the evening and the next morning on your clothes. A strong Extrait does not need more than a small amount. Try a second time to be sure the first impression was not a one-off.
Who it is for
The brand lists it as unisex and sweet-leathery, a perfume for people who like a story of opposition: sugar against smoke, fruit against leather. If you favour clean, airy or purely floral perfumes, Kama may seem like too much going on.
Why try Pernoire Kama as a sample first
Cotton candy and birch tar are two notes few people expect to like together, and both vary a great deal by skin. At a strong 25% extrait, a mismatch in a full 50 ml bottle would be a real disappointment. A decant filled from the original bottle lets you find out in small doses.

What do I get with the sample?

Is it sugary?
Blackberries and cotton candy make it sweet, but birch tar and leather balance them with smoke and dryness. How sweet it feels depends on the wearer.
What does the name mean?
Kama is the Sanskrit word for desire, and Kamadeva is the Hindu god of love, usually shown with a bow and arrow. Both are where the brand starts.
Is it a winter perfume?
The smoky leather, amber and musk suit cooler weather and evenings, but a sample lets you try it in other seasons too.

About Pernoire
Pernoire is a young Swiss house: two childhood friends, Robin Dünner and Nico Mannino, founded it in 2020 and develop every composition with the perfumer Andreas Wilhelm. Each perfume is an Extrait de Parfum, at 25% in the Anima line or 30% in Odus, and each is named after an idea or its key notes: Anelo for pineapple and pomelo, Poka for popcorn and caramel. At these concentrations a few wearings from a 10 ml decant tell you whether a perfume is yours.
