Fresh and citrus perfume samples
Fresh and citrus perfumes are not all the same: some are cologne-clean, some icy, some fruity. Eight samples from light to strong, with recorded notes.
Fresh and citrus perfume samples are the most popular place to start for people who are afraid of heavy perfume. Fresh is a wide family: lemon and bergamot colognes, mint and tea, sea air and clean linen. More than two hundred of our samples carry a fresh or citrus tag, and they differ in strength as well as in style. This guide groups eight by character, using the notes exactly as recorded, and it marks which are tagged light, moderate or strong.
Classic and clean
Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet is an Eau de Toilette tagged light, with lemon on top, lavender in the heart, and pine at the base. Lemon, lavender and pine make a brisk, traditional cologne, filed for spring and summer.

Jo Malone London Lime Basil & Mandarin is a Cologne, also tagged light: mandarin on top, basil in the heart, and amberwood at the base. Mandarin, basil and amberwood is a short, green and citrusy list.

Fascent L'Eau d'Or Dort adds clean linen. The top is bergamot, citron and lemon, the heart orange blossom, petit grain and clean linen accord, and the base aldehydes and white musk. It is tagged light for daily wear, work and sport.

Icy and marine
Riiffs Freeze pushes freshness to the cold end. The top reads green mint, Calabrian bergamot, lemon zest, grapefruit and snow, the heart ice cubes, ginger, tea and sage, and the base peony, Ambermax™ and cedar. It is tagged moderate for summer.

Sarah Baker Atlante is a salty, mineral Extrait: yuzu, pink pepper and seaweed on top, orris, lily-of-the-valley and wet rock in the heart, and ambergris, seashells, cedar and driftwood at the base. It is tagged moderate for spring and summer, and it is the sea-air sample of the group.

Citrus with fruit and ginger
Xerjoff Erba Pura is the bright citrus with fruit: lemon, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange on top, mediterranean fruit in the heart, and amber, Madagascar vanilla beans and white musk at the base. Amber and vanilla warm the base, so it is not as light as the list suggests.

Khadlaj Island Dreams keeps it simple: ginger and bergamot first, then grapefruit, and musk and ambroxan. Moderate in strength, it is filed for spring and summer.

Pernoire Anelo is the strongest of the eight, an Extrait with a tropical turn. The top reads freshly sliced pineapple, pomelo and mandarin, the heart mango, ginger and magnolia, and the base dry amber, vetiver and patchouli. Pineapple and pomelo up front, amber and vetiver below.

What the eight share
Bergamot opens Fascent L'Eau d'Or Dort, Riiffs Freeze, Xerjoff Erba Pura and Khadlaj Island Dreams, and lemon appears in Blenheim Bouquet, L'Eau d'Or Dort, Freeze and Erba Pura, so the classic pair is present in half the list. Ginger links Freeze, Island Dreams and Anelo, and musk closes L'Eau d'Or Dort, Erba Pura and Island Dreams. Cedar links Freeze and Atlante, and amber links Erba Pura and Anelo. That is the pattern behind most fresh perfumes: a citrus start, a herbal or spiced heart, and a musk, wood or amber base that holds it together.
Making fresh last
Fresh perfumes are judged by their first ten minutes and then forgotten, which is unfair to them. Spray on skin that has been moisturised with an unscented lotion, apply a second spray on the back of the neck, and check at midday and at dusk. If the base you meet then is musky, woody or ambery in a way you like, the perfume suits you. If nothing is left, try one with a stronger base, such as Anelo or Erba Pura, and compare. For a more systematic approach, how to compare two perfumes with samples gives a routine.
How to choose
If you want an everyday cologne, take Blenheim Bouquet or Lime Basil & Mandarin. If you want something unusual, take Atlante or Freeze. If you like fruit with your citrus, take Erba Pura or Anelo. Wear each on a warm day and check at the end of it: fresh perfumes need an honest test at the time they are meant for. The routine is in how to test perfume on skin, and summer perfume samples and office perfume samples have more options.
The families are on the fresh and citrus pages, and the single notes on bergamot. Houses here include Penhaligon's and Xerjoff. Every vial is decanted and labelled by FragranceGems, with no involvement from the houses; see how we fill your sample and the FAQ, while sample sets shows how to combine vials.
FAQ
Why do fresh perfumes seem to fade quickly?
Citrus and aquatic top notes are the lightest molecules, so they leave first. Fresh perfumes that last longer usually have a musky, woody or amber base. A sample tells you how your skin treats the base before you commit to a bottle.
What is the difference between fresh and citrus?
Citrus is the lemon, bergamot, orange and grapefruit group. Fresh is wider and also covers mint, herbs, tea, sea and clean linen. Many fresh perfumes use citrus, but not all citrus perfumes feel fresh.
Which fresh sample is the easiest first choice?
Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet, Jo Malone London Lime Basil & Mandarin and Fascent L'Eau d'Or Dort are all tagged light. Start with one of them.
