Spring perfume samples: what to try

Spring is a changeable season for perfume: mild mornings, warm afternoons, cool evenings. Eight spring samples that cope, from green to floral to fresh.

Arabiyat Prestige Aristo sample

Spring perfume samples are a good match for a season in which the weather changes hourly. Spring perfumes tend to be light to moderate, floral or green or citrus, with a soft musky or woody base. Around two hundred and forty of our samples carry a spring tag, and only two carry it alone: most are shared with summer or autumn. This guide picks eight that suit the season, using the notes exactly as recorded, and groups them by what they bring.

Spring alone

Arabiyat Prestige Aristo is tagged for spring and nothing else. It is an Eau de Parfum for men, tagged moderate, and the record reads ginger flower, mandarin, orange and lemon on top, magnolia, jasmine and patchouli in the heart, and vanilla, musk and sandalwood at the base. Ginger flower and magnolia give it a spring-blossom air.

Velixir Persephone is the other spring-only sample. The top is mandarin and pear, the heart musk ambrette (ambrette seed), and the base benzoin and musk. Its short list leaves room for your skin to decide, and it is filed for daily wear, evenings and work.

What the eight share

Two of the eight are tagged light and six moderate, so none is heavy. Rose stands in five of them, Iris Porcelana, Birth of Venus, Dolce Melodia, My Sweetest Morphine and Nice Bergamote, and musk closes five as well, Aristo, Persephone, Iris Porcelana, Dolce Melodia and My Sweetest Morphine. Sandalwood links Aristo, Iris Porcelana and Dolce Melodia, and bergamot links Birth of Venus, My Sweetest Morphine and Nice Bergamote. That is the spring recipe in a sentence: a citrus or green start, a rose or blossom heart, a musk or sandalwood base.

Dressing for a changeable season

Spring asks for a perfume you can layer your day around. Apply one spray at the neck in the morning, when the air is cool and a little goes a long way, and add a second to the wrists at lunch if the day has warmed. Avoid heavy strong perfumes in the first warm week, as they feel louder than they are in winter. If you are building a set, keep the spring vials for April to June and put the richer ones away for autumn; the storage guide explains how to keep them in good shape.

How to choose and test

Spring weather rewards a perfume that does not shout. Start with a light one, La Tulipe or Iris Porcelana, then try a moderate one such as Aristo or Nice Bergamote. Wear each on a real spring day, with a jacket on in the morning and off by lunch, and note how it behaves when you are warm. The routine is in how to test perfume on skin, and summer perfume samples and office perfume samples continue from here.

The season is collected under spring perfume samples, with the floral and fresh families nearby. Byredo and Ex Nihilo both appear among these eight. Every vial is decanted and labelled by FragranceGems, with no involvement from the houses, as described in how we fill your sample and the FAQ, while sample sets shows how to combine vials.

FAQ

What makes a perfume suit spring?

Spring perfumes tend to be light to moderate, with green, floral or citrus notes and a soft musky or woody base. They cope with cool mornings and warm afternoons. Our spring tag follows those traits.

Are spring perfumes the same as summer ones?

They overlap, but spring ones are usually softer and floral where summer ones are sharper and more aquatic. Many samples here also carry a summer or autumn tag, and only two are tagged for spring alone.

Should I test spring perfumes in spring?

Yes, if you can. Perfume behaves differently in mild air than in heat or cold. A sample lets you wear a spring candidate on a real spring day, not on a winter afternoon in a shop.
