Ex Nihilo was founded in Paris in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier, three people from the luxury world who hand emerging perfumers carte blanche and, the brand says, the finest raw materials without cost constraints. The perfumes sit in four universes, floral, ambery, woody and citrus, and lean on modern materials such as Ambrofix and Akigalawood. Their airy, abstract style is easy to misjudge on paper; a 10 ml decant on skin is the fairer test.

Which Ex Nihilo samples to try first
Blue Talisman, by Jordi Fernández, is where most people start: pear, bergamot and ginger over orange blossom and Georgywood, with Ambrofix, Akigalawood and musks underneath. Fleur Narcotique, by Quentin Bisch, is the floral: lychee and peach into jasmine and orange blossom on transparent wood and musk. Lust in Paradise sets pink pepper and rose absolute on white cedarwood. The Hedonist is the woody one, ginger over cedarwood and vetiver.
What to expect on skin
The house likes transparency: fruit and flowers held up by musks and modern woods rather than heavy resins, so the drydown stays soft and close. Santal Calling adds a milky accord and nutmeg to sandalwood and vanilla; Iris Porcelana keeps violet leaf, iris and rose on sandalwood and musks. Blue Talisman also exists as an Extrait de Parfum, with jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla deepening the pear. Try the Eau de Parfum first, then the Extrait.
Created out of the blue
The Latin name means, in the brand's words, 'created out of the blue'. The design language borrows from French avant-garde art of the 1970s and 1980s, and in flagship stores the Osmologue blending system makes a personal Signature on demand. Shipping was 5 days to Finland. Customer service was very good. Happy with the product also. Will shop again.
