Assaf Strike Black is a perfume that opens with black currant, bergamot and grapefruit, carries pineapple, cardamom and cinnamon through the middle and rests on pink pepper, patchouli and vetiver. Fruit, spice and dry wood in one flacon can land very differently from skin to skin, so a 2, 5 or 10 ml decant is a sensible first step before the 125 ml bottle.

Black currant with a citrus edge
The opening puts black currant, bergamot and grapefruit side by side. The currant is dark and juicy, the citrus sharpens it, so the first minutes lean bright and fruity rather than sweet. Notice how soon the grapefruit steps back on your skin, because that decides how much of the currant stays.

Pineapple and spice in the middle
Pineapple, cardamom, cinnamon and candied citron form the heart. Pineapple adds a ripe, tropical note, cardamom and cinnamon bring a dry warmth, and the candied citron gives a glossy, slightly bitter sweetness. This is the richest stage of the perfume, so smell your skin again here.

A dry, peppery base
Pink pepper, patchouli and vetiver close the composition. The pepper gives a light prickle, patchouli an earthy depth and vetiver a dry, green-woody line that stops the fruit from turning sugary. What is left is a spiced, woody skin scent you can only judge once the top has gone.

How to test it
Put a small amount on clean skin of the inner forearm and smell it at once, then again once the fruit has settled. Make the first test on a mild spring or summer day and the second on an evening. Leave the skin alone in between, and give it a second day before you decide.
Who it is for
FragranceGems lists Strike Black as unisex and moderate in strength, for daily wear, work and evenings in spring and summer. It suits someone who likes fruit with a dry wooden finish instead of a sugary one. If you prefer soft, powdery or creamy perfumes, the pepper and vetiver may feel too dry.

Is the pineapple prominent?
Pineapple sits in the heart beside cardamom, cinnamon and candied citron, so it is one part of a spiced fruit blend rather than a solo note. How loud it gets is up to your skin.
Does the pink pepper make it sharp?
Pink pepper is listed in the base with patchouli and vetiver, where it usually adds a dry edge rather than heat. A few test days on your own skin will show how it reads on you.
Which size should I start with?
The 2 ml vial gives you a first impression, the 5 ml and 10 ml sizes leave room to wear it on different days and in different moods. All three are filled from the original bottle.

Assaf makes Arabian perfumes with character, a warm oriental signature and, as FragranceGems puts it, a range that runs from elegant daytime scents to rich evening compositions.
