Leather perfume samples: what to try
A leather note can be soft suede, salty skin, fruit or smoke. Eight leather and suede samples, from light colognes to dark evening perfumes.
Leather perfume samples reward patience. A leather note in perfume is not made from hide but built by perfumers to give an impression: dry, supple, slightly smoky or sweet. In note lists it can read as leather, suede, leather accord or Russian leather, and it shows up in around sixty of our samples. It is a note that people either find sophisticated or too much, and the range inside it is wide, from a quiet suede base under a flower to the darkest evening perfume. This guide groups eight by how much leather they carry.
Soft suede
Jo Malone London Peony & Blush Suede uses suede as the whole base. The record reads red apple on top, peony in the heart, and suede at the base. It is a Cologne tagged moderate for spring and summer, and for women.
Penhaligon's Endymion is the lightest sample in this guide. It is an Eau de Cologne, tagged light, and the recorded list is a single group: bergamot, lavandin, suede, coffee accord, geranium and cedarwood. Suede and coffee beside lavandin make a clean, tailored scent for daily wear and work.
Leather with air and water
Stéphane Humbert Lucas Sea My Love puts leather in the heart of an aquatic. The top is mandarin and salt, the heart leather, jasmine and sea notes, and the base amber, musk, patchouli and benzoin. Salt and sea notes next to leather are unusual, and it is tagged for spring and summer.
Maison Asrar Vanguard places leather at the start of a fruity, citrus base. The top is pineapple, black currant, pink pepper, apple, grapefruit and bergamot, the heart cardamom, ginger, carnation and lily of the valley, and the base leather, ambergris, cedarwood, musk, cashmere musk and moss. It carries the moderate tag and covers daily wear, evening and work.
Leather as a lead note
Sospiro Erba Leather opens with bergamot, lemon and passion fruit, moves to jasmine, sandalwood and leathery notes, and ends on amber and vetiver. Passion fruit and citrus up front give the leather a bright entrance, but it is tagged strong, for autumn and winter.
Byredo Black Saffron has leather accord in the heart. The top is juniper berries, pomelo and saffron, the heart black violet, cristal rose and leather accord, and the base blonde woods, raspberry and vetiver. Saffron and juniper start it spicy, and raspberry at the base adds a dark sweetness.
Leather with fruit and iris
Mind Games Jadoube sets leather among fruit and rose. Its top is rouge groseille di and mandarin oil Madagascar, the heart bright red pomegranate and damascene rose, and the base ambrostar, benzoin vintage leather and patchouli oil sulawesi. Pomegranate and rose are an elegant frame for vintage leather.
Stéphane Humbert Lucas Soleil de Jeddah places leather in the base of a powdery iris. The top is lemon, wild chamomile oil and osmanthus, the heart iris roots, amber and earthy notes, and the base iris butter, russian leather and vanilla from Madagascar. It is the most unusual list of the eight and tagged strong.
What the eight share
Leather sits in the base in four of them, Peony & Blush Suede, Vanguard, Jadoube and Soleil de Jeddah, and in the heart in three, Sea My Love, Erba Leather and Black Saffron. The intensity tags split cleanly: four are strong, three moderate and one light. That tells you how to build a ladder. Start with Endymion, step to the moderate three, and only then try the strong four. Amber appears in Sea My Love, Erba Leather and Soleil de Jeddah, and rose in Black Saffron and Jadoube. How to choose
If you are new to leather, begin with Endymion or Peony & Blush Suede, which show the suede side. If you like the idea of leather and spice, take Black Saffron. If you like fruit, take Jadoube. What does a leather note in perfume actually come from?
It is an impression built by perfumers from woods, resins, smoky materials and sometimes florals, not from hide. Lists may say leather, suede, leather accord or Russian leather. They name different shades of the same family.
Is leather only for autumn and winter?
