Which Amouage sample to try first
Amouage has composed perfume in Oman since 1983, with frankincense and resins never far away. Eight samples ordered by reviews, and a map of what they share.
Amouage has composed perfume in the Sultanate of Oman since 1983. The house was founded by the Albusaidi family, and it says Oman was a historic trading centre for incense and myrrh, which is why resins sit close to the heart of its work. The perfumes are composed in Paris, Grasse, Geneva and New York, and most are made at the house's own manufacture in Muscat. Several carry long note lists, and several change a great deal over a day, so an Amouage sample gives you time to decide before you commit to a bottle.
Amouage: eight samples, ordered by reviews
We ordered the Amouage samples on our list by the number of reviews each perfume has collected on Fragrantica, as gathered by NicheGems. A high review count means a perfume is talked about, not that it is better. The notes below are the house's, unchanged.
Reflection Man (2007, Lucas Sieuzac) is filed by the house under fougère and amber: rosemary, red pepper berries and bitter orange leaves, then neroli, orris, jasmine and ylang-ylang, ending on vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood.

Guidance (2023, Quentin Bisch) reinterprets the house triad of rose, frankincense and ambergris: pear, frankincense and hazelnut, then saffron, rose, jasmine sambac and osmanthus, over cistus, sandalwood, Akigalawood, ambergris and vanilla.

Interlude Man (2012, Pierre Negrin) is described as born from chaos with a calm hidden at its heart: bergamot, oregano and pimento berry oil, then amber, frankincense, cistus and opoponax, and leather, agarwood smoke, patchouli and sandalwood.

Jubilation XXV Man (2008, Bertrand Duchaufour) is the densest list of the eight: labdanum, coriander, orange, davana, frankincense and blackberry, then honey, bay, cinnamon, orchid, rose, clove, celery seeds and guaiac wood, over patchouli, opoponax, myrrh, atlas cedarwood, musk, moss, ambergris, oud wood and immortelle.

Interlude Black Iris Man (2020) is a reworking the house likens to an overpainting. It adds orris to the Interlude frame: bergamot, rosemary and violet leaves, then orris, amber, frankincense, cistus, myrrh and vanilla, and leather, agarwood smoke, patchouli, sandalwood and cedarwood.

Outlands (2024, Cécile Zarokian) is an Essence. Its note list is the longest of the set, from cardamom, bergamot, lemon, Sichuan pepper, elemi and frankincense through patchouli, rose, orange blossom, cumin, geranium, davana, saffron, anise and coriander to benzoin, labdanum, amber, ambergris, opoponax, vanilla, birch, musks and oud.

Guidance 46 (2024) is the Extrait of Guidance, with nothing removed and more added: pear, frankincense, hazelnut, rose water, pink pepper and bitter almond, then saffron, rose, sambac jasmine and osmanthus, over cistus, sandalwood, Akigalawood, ambergris, vanilla, ambrette, Georgywood and cypriol.

Honour Woman (2011, Alexandra Carlin and Violaine Collas) is a white floral after the story of Madame Butterfly: black pepper, rhubarb leaves and coriander, then jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, lily of the valley and carnation, and vetiver, frankincense, amber, opoponax and leather.

The Amouage note map
Frankincense is the thread through seven of the eight; only Reflection Man leaves it out. Patchouli sits in Reflection Man, Interlude Man, Interlude Black Iris Man, Jubilation XXV Man and Outlands, and sandalwood sits in five of the eight. Cistus links the two Guidance samples and the two Interlude samples. Ambergris appears in both Guidance samples, Jubilation XXV Man and Outlands, saffron in both Guidance samples and Outlands, and leather in both Interlude samples and Honour Woman. Follow the materials through incense, saffron, leather and oud.
Two vials make a fair start: Reflection Man for the polished side and Guidance for the resinous floral one. Add Interlude Man if you want smoke and leather. The oud guide places Jubilation and Outlands next to other oud samples, evening samples collects the heavier ones, and sample sizes helps you decide how much to order.
From Amouage sample to bottle
If one of these is still on your mind after several wearings, think about the bottle. Our vial is filled by FragranceGems from the original bottle and labelled by us; Amouage is not involved and it is not a brand sample. The first perfume in full size is at Amouage Reflection Man. The sample set page shows combinations, and the FAQ covers filling and labels.
FAQ
Which Amouage sample should I try first?
Reflection Man. It has the most reviews of any Amouage on our list, and its rosemary, neroli, orris and vetiver give a polished first impression of the house before you try the resinous perfumes.
What is the difference between Eau de Parfum, Extrait and Essence at Amouage?
On the house's own scale an Eau de Parfum holds 15 to 35% perfume oil and an Extrait 40 to 56%. Guidance 46 is dosed at 46%, and the Essence Outlands at 30%, infused for six months. Each vial is labelled with its concentration.
Why sample Amouage before buying a bottle?
The perfumes are dense and layered, so the opening is only a small part of the story. A decant lets you live with the drydown over several wearings before you decide on a bottle.
