Woody perfume samples: where to start
Woody perfumes can be dry cedar, soft sandalwood, grassy vetiver or mossy birch. Eight woody samples sorted by the wood that leads.
Woody perfume samples are the safest place to start if you do not yet know what you like. Woody is the largest family in our shelves, with more than three hundred samples tagged with it, and it contains very different scents: dry cedar, creamy sandalwood, grassy vetiver, mossy birch and smoky papyrus. This guide picks eight that each lead with a different wood, using the notes exactly as recorded, so that you can learn which wood is yours.
Cedar-led
Rayhaan Cedrus Blanc is the plainest cedar. The record has one note per tier: bergamot on top, musk in the heart, and cedar at the base. It is tagged moderate for spring, summer and autumn, and for daily wear and work.

Rayhaan Nava Sol reverses the order, putting cedar on top, musk in the heart, and amber and sandalwood below. Cedar, sandalwood and amber give it a warm wood profile that our records cover in all four seasons.

Soft woods with flowers
Byredo Mojave Ghost is a floral wood. The top reads ambrette and naseberry, the heart magnolia, sandalwood and violet, and the base cedarwood, musks and vetiver. Sandalwood and cedarwood make a pale, smooth backbone for magnolia and violet.

Vetiver and patchouli
Frédéric Malle French Lover is the aromatic wood: pimiento, angelica and juniper on top, and patchouli, vetiver and frankincense at the base. It has no heart noted, so it moves from juniper and angelica straight into patchouli and vetiver. Tagged moderate for evening and work.

Rayhaan Cordova opens with leather and settles on woods: leather, then cypress and patchouli, and woody notes, amber and vetiver. It is an Eau de Parfum for men, tagged for autumn and winter.

Birch, moss and papyrus
Afnan Supremacy Collectors Edition is the mossy one. The top is pineapple, bergamot, apple and white flowers, the heart birch wood, amber and orange blossom, and the base oak moss, musk and ambergris. Birch wood and oak moss give a green, slightly smoky wood under a fruity start.

Maison Crivelli Papyrus Moléculaire has a single list: coriander essential oil, papyrus essential oil, sandalwood essential oil, black pepper essential oil, tonka bean absolute, tobacco absolute and leather accord. Papyrus and sandalwood sit beside tobacco and leather, a dry wood with a spice rack around it.

Wood with rum
Penhaligon's The Tragedy of Lord George is the darkest of the eight. The recorded list is ambrox, rum and tonka bean. It is tagged strong, for evenings, autumn and winter.

What the eight share
Seven of the eight are tagged moderate and only The Tragedy of Lord George is strong, which is why this selection reads as a gentle introduction. Musk sits with the wood in Cedrus Blanc, Nava Sol, Mojave Ghost and Supremacy Collectors Edition. Vetiver links Mojave Ghost, French Lover and Cordova, sandalwood links Nava Sol, Mojave Ghost and Papyrus Moléculaire, and amber links Nava Sol, Cordova and Supremacy. Seasons split in the middle: Cedrus Blanc, Supremacy, Mojave Ghost and French Lover include spring, while Cordova, Papyrus Moléculaire and Lord George lean to autumn and winter.
Wood by season
A woody perfume is the one family that works in almost any weather, because the wood is dry rather than sweet or fresh. In summer, pick the cedar and moss ones, where musk and citrus keep the wood light. In winter, pick the vetiver, papyrus and rum ones, where spice and resin add warmth. If you can only buy one vial, take a moderate cedar such as Cedrus Blanc and wear it for a week in changing weather. That test teaches you how the same wood behaves on a cool morning and on a warm afternoon, and it shows whether you want more of it or less.
How to choose
If you want an easy wood, start with Cedrus Blanc or Mojave Ghost. If you like green and grassy, take French Lover. If you like smoke and spice, take Papyrus Moléculaire or Cordova. Wear each on clean skin and notice whether the wood feels dry, creamy or mossy. The routine is in how to test perfume on skin, and the sandalwood guide and patchouli guide go deeper into two of these woods. Office perfume samples suits the lighter ones.
The full family is on the woody perfume samples page, and single woods are under cedar, vetiver and sandalwood. Houses here include Rayhaan and Byredo. FragranceGems decants every vial and puts on the label itself, and the houses play no part; see how we fill your sample and the FAQ, while sample sets shows how to combine vials.
FAQ
What makes a perfume woody?
A woody perfume is built on wood notes such as cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, birch or patchouli. They sit mostly in the base and give a dry, warm or smoky backbone. Tops and hearts can still be fruity, floral or spicy.
Are woody perfumes only for men?
No. Our records file the woody samples in this guide mostly under unisex. Wood notes are neutral, and the audience tag mainly reflects how the house presents the perfume.
Which woody sample is the easiest to wear?
Rayhaan Cedrus Blanc and Byredo Mojave Ghost, both tagged moderate and for daily wear. They keep the wood soft with musk, flowers or citrus.
